Post Locked your keys in the car?

Remove this ad
I haven't tried this but let me know if it actually works if somebody else tries it!!! Sounds like a good idea.

What to do if you lock your keys in the car.

Locked your keys in your car ? Did you know this? Good thing to know.
If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call
someone on your (or someone else's) cell phone.

Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car's front windshield, or
dash and have the other person at your home press the unlock button of
your key fob (clicker), holding it near the phone on their end. Your car doors will unlock. It saves someone from having to drive your keys to you.

Distance is no object you could be hundreds of miles away, and if you
can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can
unlock the doors (or the trunk!).

Editor's Note * It works fine! We tried it out, and it unlocked our
car over a cell phone!

Mike's Note * " I locked the car and had my youngest daughter call me
while she was near the car. I clicked open into the phone and I could
hear the car doors unlock through her cell phone. My daughter
confirmed that sure enough the doors opened."

Re: Locked your keys in the car?

That one has been floating around for a long time. It's complete and total rubbish. It can't work for so many reasons I don't even know where to begin. So I won't.

Either that or there is some other explanation. Whatever unlocked your doors did not come from the cell phone. As the Snopes article points out, if the car's lock/unlock mechanism base based on some sort of sound it would work. But it isn't. It's based on receiving a radio signal from the key fob that has a very limited range. Cell phones do not take wireless signals from other devices and transmit them.

The reason OnStar can unlock your car is that they send data via the cellular phone network that communicates with the car's computer to unlock the doors. It's in a proprietary format and cannot be duplicated by simply pointing a key fob at a cell phone - they're not sending some super-strong key-fob like signal. What they send is data processed by a module (they call it a "VIM" actually, Vehicle Integration Module) connected to the OnStar mobile phone unit in the car. It has nothing to do with the RF receiver that receives the information from your key fob.
