Sport mode and rev limiter what does your catera do?

Remove this ad
Hey guys i was wondering if there was a rev limiter on the catera? There has to be. The reason i ask is when im in sport mode my catera shifts out of first and second at about 6,700-6,800 rpms in the red and close to all the way up at 7,000! It just scares me that the engine will over rev. Can anything be done or is it normal? I use premium fuel and synthetic oil for most protection

Hehe, mine does the same thing but I always let off just a bit before it gets there and i get right back into it and that way i force it to shift around 6 rather then the 7k range. I am sure that the car is protected in anyway possible and the engine was meant to do that when in sport mode so i wouldnt give it much thought.

Normal the car shits at lower rpms for better gas mileage, but in sport mode it runs all the way up to the redline for more spirited driving. It does no harm to the car.

Re: Sport mode and rev limiter what does your catera do?

This was a very interesting discussion to me. I have had my 97 Catera for 10 years and was always afraid to go into the red zone, although I always thought that 6500 red zone was low for a DOHC engine. My low-tech Olds Alero V6 is red-lined at 6000.

Apparently, the "red zone" isn't a hard cutoff like a "redline" would be, and the engine can spin close to 7000. Some day, when I think I am finished with the 97 Catera and its Blue Book value is zilch, I think I am going to floor it in sport mode and see what happens.

Barry

Had mine for 2 years and I drive it like I stole it all day, every day. No problems from the engine at all. It seems to like it!!!

The Catera also has a fuel shutoff protection... I believe it's around 7,000 or so... someone correct me if I'm wrong....
