PO455 Gas Cap Code

Did a can a saw the P0455 code. Tried to tighten the gas cap (still doesn't seem to be tight enough) and the code was still appearing. Anyways, I erased the code and the check engine light is now off. Anyways, how big of a deal is this...does a lot of fuel actually get released through vapors?
