Thumbs up External oil cooler

For Caterasweetheart,

I put one on recently instead of the on board leaky one (which I removed completely), and have found that it has not made that much difference to running temperatures. I used a 4" X 11" X 1"3/4 engine oil cooler I got from some transmission place in Mississauga (ONT) for about $58. Mounted it behind the front #plate (which I must relocate to allow more air in), inside the front fender.
The car maybe takes a little longer to heat up but it still cycles on the fans - in my case when the needle is just over the half mark. Outside temp here in Brampton (ONT) however is 30C plus - car is bound to get hot on y short trips. I will definitely need a blanket round the cooler for winter however!

Thanks for the Idle speed info.

Re: External oil cooler

Thanks Mark. I've begun to see Mayo under the oil cap and in the fill tube. It could just be condensation but who knows? My 2001 may have the new and improved GM oil cooler (or it may not) but I have little faith in it especially buried in the engine where I can't see it. This external cooler would help me sleep at night.

Re: External oil cooler

I got the directions from http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/CateraOwners/ in the files section. I removed the oil pipes completely and ran the new hose directly from the in/out block holes by the oil filter. I had a machine shop weld in plugs in the oil cooler cover. Sorry no pictures, but the article from yahoo is faairly specific.

That is just condensation....oil cooler failure shows as mayo in the coolant tank.....changing the coolant every 2 years with long life stuff of a 50:50 mix WILL stop oil cooler failure....

You have to consider that the filler neck on the V6 is long and does not get any cam oil wash (like most do) and hence you get moisture trapped here (its a high point) which mixes with the oil creating the mayo....I have saved many a few bucks by pointing this out as a possible headgasket failure to a dealers when buying these units (it scares teh hell out of them!) knowing dam well its normal operation....

Using good oila dn changing it regularly helps to....
