Transmission: Range Switch

What is the range switch on a transmission?

Where can I get one?

Are they easy to replace?

I cant find any information in the GM service manuals. Maybe it is under a different name.

Re: Transmission: Range Switch

Need to confirm the year but here is one for a 98 model.

Document ID# 257107

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DTC P0705 Trans Range Switch Circuit

Circuit Description
The Transmission Range Switch is attached externally to the left side of the 4L30-E transmission on the gear selector shaft. The Transmission Range Switch informs the TCM and the Gear Position Indicator (on the console) which gear the driver selects.

The ignition voltage applies to terminal D of the Transmission Range Switch. Depending on the selector lever position, this ignition voltage connects to the various combinations of terminals A, B, C, and G of the Transmission Range Switch. The TCM decodes these combinations in order to determine gear position.

Conditions for Running the DTC
The ignition is on.

Conditions for Setting the DTC
The switch indicates an undefined position for longer than 20 seconds.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets
The TCM illuminates the Service Transmission Lamp (STL) and sends a MIL Request to the ECM on the second consecutive drive trip that the diagnostic runs and fails. The ECM then illuminates the MIL.
The ECM records the operating conditions in the Freeze Frame at the time of the MIL Request from the TCM.
The transmission operates in the Default Mode.
Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC
The TCM turns off the STL as soon as the fault is no longer present.
The ECM turns off the MIL after three consecutive drive trips during which the TCM sends no MIL Request.
A History DTC clears after forty consecutive warm-up cycles, if no failures are present by this diagnostic or any other emission related diagnostic.
The scan tool clears the MIL/DTC.
Diagnostic Aids
Use the Connector Test Adapter Kit J 35616-A for any test that requires probing the TCM harness connector or a component harness connector. Using this kit will prevent damage to the harness connector terminals.

Check for the following conditions:

Poor connections at the TCM or at the component. Inspect the harness connectors for any backed out terminals, improper mating, broken locks, improperly formed or damaged terminals, and poor terminal to wire connection. Refer to Engine Electrical, Troubleshooting Procedures, Checking Terminal Contact for proper procedure.
Damaged harness. Inspect the wiring harness for damage. If the harness appears to be OK, observe the scan tool while moving any related connectors and any wiring harnesses. A change in the display may help to locate the fault.
Test Description
The number(s) below refer to the step number(s) on the Diagnostic Table.

The scan tool display should match the selector lever position at each detent stop. If the lever has to be moved slightly within a position to get the right indication on the scan tool, the Transmission Range Switch adjustment should be checked. Refer to Automatic Transmission, On-Vehicle Service, Transmission Range Switch.

Terminal D in the mating connector (harness side) can be used as the power source.

Re: Transmission: Range Switch

Yup, that's it. It's more commonly refered to as the "Neutral Position Switch" or PRNDL sensor. It wasn't the electrical connection on mine. It was mechanical. There is a plastic part that attaches to the shaft & it broke in two. It kills me, because I pulled it apart & I'm sure it doesn't take more than $5 to make one of these things, however it's kinda expensive at the dealership ($300 range), but I was able to special order one through Autozone's website for $109. No one carried it in stock locally for me (Advanced Auto Parts, Autozone, Car Quest, O' Reilly's, NAPA). It worked perfectly for me. Do note that if you remove it, that the center nut connecting the linkage is easy to snap & you will be stuck if that happens. So, pile on the WD-40 or whatever thread loosener you choose for a few days before.

Re: Transmission: Range Switch

Went to the autozone website to see if I could order this part. (PRNDL) Is it also called the neutral saftey switch? It's roughly the same price as the previous post which is why I'm asking.
