| | | Re: Who owns a Catera? I got an '01 Catera Sport w/ 64,000 miles on now. I bought it as a manufacturer's recall, and have never had a problem with it in 12,000 miles, so hopefully it stays this way. I love it |

| | | Re: Who owns a Catera? I own a 2001. Replaced the tranny at 60,000. I now have to replace the valve cover gaskets. GM tech tells me I should replace the timing belt and Cateras are known for belt going bad. Anyone have problems like this? |

| | | Re: Who owns a Catera? Well, better late, etc. I own a 2000 Catera and have enjoyed it since 2003. Got it with 18k miles on it and a good warranty. Nothing really major has happened, some of the gadgets have problems: rear sunshade replaced at least 3 times. Now have 70k miles on it and the warranty just expired.... I am curious how some of you are doing in the higher mileages.
Met a man in Harrisburg, PA recently who still has a '97 from new and intends to keep it... retired older gent.
Anyway hope some of you see this and share. |

We bought it at a dealership in Lansing for a little over $3600 w/tax/plates/etc. It has 105K but several major problems that we knew about, including leaking valve covers, cracked front window, and bad rear shocks. We replaced the front window ($180), put on new Monroe air shocks ($70), got the Delco battery replaced (was under warranty so it was replaced for the 2nd time for free) and did some minor other fixes. We were lucky enough to find out who the original owner was and she passed us all the service bills -- over $4800 in the past 3 years (new heater core, heater control valve, 2 alternators, tie rods, water pump, oil pressure and crank sensor, and 2 sets of pads/rotors).
We are currently tackling a previously unknown heating problem (unknown cost) and the leaking valve covers ($38). This forum has been extremely helpful to this new comer and we have already been able to help another person tackle a front door problem (that we just completed), which is how forums survive. I would not let the lack of replies to your posting dissuade you from asking questions or (and more importantly) helping others if you have insight into a given problem.
We hope that once the above is complete, he will have a very nice looking, safe and dependable car to take to college in a few years.
Take care.

| | | Re: Who owns a Catera? Hey,
I purchased a used 97 catera in feb of this year. It had 84000 miles. I will have to say that this is a nice car. I love all the luxury features, and it rides well. But, I will have to say it these past 8 months I have had my share of problems. First it was my transmission which was rebuilt, and I havent had a problem since then. My most recent problems are as follows. I have a coolant leak coming from the back of the engine closer to the driver side. From reading the past forums I believe it to be eitheir the oil cooler or heater control valve.
While driving the car I am overwhelmed by fumes inside the car. It smells like oil burning. Again from the past forums I am quessing that it is linked to the oil cooler (?)
I also hear a noise when sitting (both in drive or park) the noise is hard to describe. Not really a ticking noise. It kind of sounds like a vaccum type noise. I want to upgrade to a cd player but finding a bose harness hasn't been that easy. My brake lights arent working. I have a bad brake light switch. dealer wants to chare me close to 200.00. It looks pretty easy. If anyone has any ideas or if u have had similar issues. Please help me. By the way I love this forum. It has been extremely help.Though I dont have much knowledge with mechanics I will be glad to chare any info on the repairs that I have had done.
Does anyone know where I can get a list of recall for my catera |

| | Re: Who owns a Catera? Hey, My Cat is back! Well sort of. Love this forum!! I posted on here somewhere about it cranking and never starting. Well, I read a lot about the CPS and printed out the pictures and instructions on how to replace it. But, my husband and one of his mechanic friends decided it was the fuel pump. HA! He ordered one from E-bay for $170 and replaced it. Guess what???? The car still didn't start! He also tested the old fuel pump. Guess what???? It worked fine. After being without my Cat for nearly a month, my husband decides maybe it is the CPS and ordered it from Auto Zone, got it yesterday, put it in today. The car runs fine, but it smells like gas inside the car, really bad. He said he left some rubber seal off (something to do with the fuel tank) just in case he needs to take the tank off again. Do you think this is why I am being consumed by the gas smell inside the car? He is so fed up with this car that I think he's hoping it catches on fire. We've had a lot of work done to the car and by now it's about totally new and I still love it. The fuel pump and the CPS is the first time my husband has worked on the car. I worry about him taking a shortcut or something that might cause a whole lot of damage. Let me know what you think about that rubber thing and the gas smell. Keep up the great advice! |
