RE: Reduced torque in 3rd gear - overdrive. The rear brake lights (and some other thinbgs) are controlled by the same computer as the torque converter and overdrive. If any of the components hooked to that computer have failed or are failing, the transmission will be affected as you describe. You need Cadillac's sophisticated diagnostic computer to nail down the problem --worth the $50 charge most dealers charge; otherwise, some not-so-savvy mechanic will be trying to sell you a new transmission and your car will still not be fixed.

i own a catera... have had the normal problems...

timing belt issue... had 103k when it went.. got a letter int he mail while it was in the shop and found out that this was an issue.. and if it was 7 yrs or under 100k they would cover it.. well mine was 3k over cadillac woulndt cover it....

tires get used easily..

the headlight issues..

heatercore leaks a little...

leaks oil

the cranks senior inactive-check engine lite.. and throwing the 02 senor codes at me... still runs good...

had the plug wire problem... dont get the 300$ crap wires.... i bought some used off ebay. 20k on them they lasted me about 2k b4 they started to go... so when to O'Riley Auto Parts and got some Brog Warner wires for it... $160 w/ plugs.. and a lifetime... well limited lifetime warranty... couldnt beat that.. ran good ever since.. now have like 8k on those.. not a miss since...

its a 1997 w/ all the options... has a lil over 144k and still runs.... amazing....

Talking Super Cheap Replacement Parts!! OWE YA

I just got my front brakes done. They tried to tell me about $1000 cdn just for front rotors and pads. I said ya F'n right. went on the net for 5 min found Brembo rotors and ceramic pads for $325 cdn for everything including shipping. It was at my door in less than a week. DON'T LET THEM SELL YOU ANYTHING AT THEIR BOGUS DEALER PRICES. Catera parts aren't cheap. But you save a shis load by doing minimal research. Check www.car-stuff.com/cadillacbrakes.htm you should find all possible replacement parts for your Catera here, As Cheap as possible.

Wink Re: Who owns a Catera?

Hi,

I have a '97 Dark Green Catera 82K that we bought in November 1996. Still looks great after 9 1/2 years. When I see it in the parking lot, I remember why I bought it.

I was thinking of replacing it with a CTS, but my wife isn't into the styling on the CTS (and neither am I). Also, it would cost me $40K to get a car equipped like my Catera.

The ususal coolant leaks and a very slow oil leak.

Barry

Re: Who owns a Catera?

Wow, my 2001 Catera has been a problem from day one, new battery , rebuilt transmission , mass sensor replacement , co2 sensor replacement , right front wheel bearing replacement , shifter replacement , both front seat heaters replacement , new alternator , new seal on oil cooler , new front pads and rotors and the car only has 51,000 miles. I purchased an exteneded warranty on line and they have paid for everything w/ a zero deductable. The warranty stops when I exceed the kelly book cost, I hope that isn't too soon, lol!
