I hope this helps, just like you said it's very expensive to fix this damn car. I'm in Northern California - the total for the repair was close to 600.00 (part 120.00). I doubt if your labor cost are as high as mine.
Yeah...the Craptera's eat tires for breakfast...we've gone thru 2 sets in less than 40,000 miles...and two sets of brakes too...and a myriad of other problems...it has a nice ride but it's not worth it for the amount of maintenance and down days one has. There are plenty of other cars wit hnice rides out there too, without the amount of headaches the Craptera gives.

KNOW I HAVE ISSUES> the recall for the timing belt was done and new heads
at 95000k it got 98565k and guess what it broke and cadillac is giving me the run around and now i dont know what to do there is good and bad
very bad 2,300 takes to replace engine and labor, but the interior and style is
sporty for a family sedan. LOST. IS there a better replacement or different
engine to put in it
From my experience, you're best off counting your blessings that you only paid $1500., and now cut your losses. You need to replace more than the engine...we have only 40,000 miles and we've replaced our battery 6 times, 2 sets of tires, 2 complete sets of brakes, gas tank problems, the mirror mechanics broke, the wiring harness went bad (which was causing the batterys to fail fast, but Cadillac never reimubursed us, even though it was under warranty), the timing chain went, coolant problem leaks - repeatedly, lots of electircal bugs, and more...not to mention the problems that the DexCool creates in eating up the engine...refer to the Yahoo site other owners who have had that unpleasant experience (basically as soo nas you're doen with your warranty, switch your anti-freeze to regular anti-freeze, not the GM DexCool, which liteally eats away the engine in many cases). If I was you, I'd repair your Catera enough to get it running, and dump it...or be a good citizen and consider scraping it so someon else doesn't inherit the problem

Yes, there is a recall for Catera '99 timing belts...check with your dealer. Good luck!

Re: Who owns a Catera?

We use to call them Cateribles.... We started calling the CTS Cadillac's Third Strike until they turned out to be pretty decent cars. Still don't like what they've done to the new STS. Like the '06 DTS though

Re: Who owns a Catera?

I have not bought one yet and now that i have read it has a lot of problems i am thinking i should not get one. I have a Eclipse GSX that i was going to trade or sell to get one. I like the way they look. I thought it would be a great sporty car for a young adult.

Re: Who owns a Catera?

Hi folks, chris here from the UK, i have had 4 omegas so far,1999 2.5V6elite(top spec), 2000 3.0V6 MV6 police spec (sport), 3.0V6elite estate(wagon) and now on a 1999 2.5TDI (cdx with elite spec) estate(BMW Engine), all my V6 engines have had problems ranging from crankshaft sensers to major head gasket rebuilds. my 2.5TD has not given me any problems at all, i have put a power-box on it that gives it 35bhp extra, i had her doing 130mph today not bad for a tractor!!
did cadillac ever sell the TD in the states or do you not go for the diesel over there??
regards
chris..

Wink Re: Who owns a Catera?

Hi All:

I own a 98 Catera and I must say that with this car there is TRULY a thin line between love and hate. I dig the style and performance (after a set of $300 plug wires and a new coil pack) The car runs like a striped ass ape. Currently my Catera has 136k and is in need of:

Catalytic Converter $630 (each)
Blend Door Actuator $82 (and finding out where the hell it is)
Factory Amp quit powering up (small jumper wire to other +12v source)

Other than that i really love this car.
