EBTCM Removal.... any tips.

Remove this ad
Does anyone have any tips on how to remove the EBTCM on a 98 Catera. Is it difficult, any special tools required and most importantly once its out, can you still drive the car until you get it repaired>?

Thanks in advance everyone.

BTW
Any pixs of the removal process would be great/

Electronic Brake and Traction Control Module Replacement
Removal Procedure
Notice: To prevent equipment damage, never connect or disconnect the wiring harness connection from the EBCM with the ignition switch in the ON position.

Notice: Avoid getting water, brake fluid or engine coolant into the socket of the EBCM/EBTCM connector. Failure to observe this precaution could result in damage to the EBCM/EBTCM.

Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
Remove the cover from the relay center (1).
Remove the Engine Control Module (ECM) (2) from the relay center (1). Move the ECM harness to one side.
Remove the lower radiator hose from the engine only. Refer to Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling. Move the radiator hose to one side.

Pull out lock tab from the EBTCM harness connector (1).
Disconnect the EBTCM harness connector .

Disconnect the pump motor connector (3) at the bottom of the EBTCM.
Remove the six EBTCM to BPMV screws (2) and discard.
Separate the EBTCM (1) from the BPMV (5) by gently pulling apart until separated.
Important: Be careful not to damage seal. Do not pry apart using a tool.

Important: Care must be taken not to damage the solenoid valves when the EBTCM is removed from the BPMV.

Remove two wave springs (1) between the EBTCM and BPMV and discard.
Important: Note the location and the orientation of the wave springs in order to aid during installation.

Installation Procedure
Important: Only the new wave spring(s) and screws supplied with the new EBTCM should be used.

Clean the BPMV gasket surface with alcohol using a clean rag.

Install two wave springs (1) between the EBTCM and BPMV. Use locations and orientation noted during removal.

Install the EBTCM (1) to the BPMV (5).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

Tighten

Tighten the top four mounting screws (2) to 2.9 N·m (26 lb in.). Tighten screws in an X pattern.

Tighten

Tighten the bottom two mounting screws (2) to 2.9 N·m (26 lb. in.).

Connect the pump motor connector (3) to the bottom of the EBTCM.

Connect the EBTCM harness connector. Push in lock tab (1).

Install the lower radiator hose to the engine. Refer to Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
Install the ECM (2) into the relay center (1).
Install the cover to the relay center (1).
Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position, engine off.
Perform the Diagnostic System Check - ABS

Wow...looks like a hard job? What level of mechanical expertise would you suggest someone have that attempts this?

Re: EBTCM Removal.... any tips.

Remove ecm and harness from box and bend out of the way. Remove box, I
believe two push in pins on the side and 10mm nut on bottom. Pull up on box and bend out of the way. Here is the part that makes it easy. Bend battery
tray corner up so you can get your arm and ratchet down there. I believe there is six 20 or 25 torque bit bolts.

Re: EBTCM Removal.... any tips.

We usually remove the battery and unhook the 3 large connectors next to the tray, remove the hose and then use combinations of extensions and swivels to get onto the bolts.
I think you can loosen the BPMV mounting screws and raise it up a little for better access also but I have ony done 2 of them so I don't remember the details.
Be sure to use a very tight fitting torx bit, one size too small and you could strip out the hole for the tool.

Re: EBTCM Removal.... any tips.

What are some signs of this thing on its way out the door? I have a 97 Catera that sometimes when pulling from a dead stop at an aggressive rate will create this shutter like slip in the transmission. Its not so agressive that its creating wheel spin, just a heavier than normal take off.

Re: EBTCM Removal.... any tips.

The loss of the speedometer and the CEL and possibly transmission lights coming on is what I see right away when this failure occurs.
Sounds like you might be looking at something else.

Re: EBTCM Removal.... any tips.

Can the car be driven while the EBTCM is removed? I want to send it to one of those rebuilders but need to drive the car for work.

Red face Re: HELP WITH THIS BLEEPING EBTCM Removal.... any tips.

Ok, steps completed.

1. took out the ECM.
2. took out battery
3. took off three cylinders hooked to battery plate (in hopes to gain better access)
4. took off the b!tch radiator hose at the engine. (clip was turned side ways and could not get pliers around one side)
5. several bloody knuckles later and I am ready to scream. I have the lock pulled out of the ebtcm and now have two screws out. The other four are impossible and I am close to panic. I have to get these out before my husband gets home in two days and need some assistance. If I could get this battery plate out of the way I think I could reach the last four. I work in an office all day and I am not used to this. (long story short he bet me I couldn't do it. the $1300 I'll save by not going to the dealership goes to me if I can do it)

thanks for any assistance!

If you pull the lock on the plug far enough out, the plug will separate from the unit(if you haven't already done).

As for the four lower screws...I had to use different combo's of extensionsions and universal joints for each screw, and it was still a pain. I think a flexable extension or a finger grip ratchet might be the way to go.

Re: EBTCM Removal.... any tips.

We recently bought a Catera and had the same problems... Our mechanic did say that if we drove it without fixing the problem it could case transmission problems. The EBTCM tells the transmission when to shift We had lots of error codes, no speedometer, tachometer, brakes were squirrely, etc. When our mechanic removed the EBTCM he noted that someone had already tried to do the repair work with the wrong year parts! We went ahead and ordered a salvaged ABS system online from a parts dealer (paid $150.00) and then took it all to the mechanic. We had the car back to us in one week from start to finish! The mechanic charged $240.00. All the error codes were fixed.

Re: EBTCM Removal.... any tips.

try unplugging the connector and driving the car, there'll be some codes and warning lights and you might find that speed is limited.
you'll have no abs, traction or stability systems.
