I have a question if anybody had this problem before. My 97 Catera has airbag light on. It was on since i bought it. I checked car for accidents, everything seems to be ok.
From what i found only dealer can reset the light. They want to charge almost 90 dollars. It's matter of just plugging computer and pressing reset.
The problem is what if some sensor is bad or clockspring, then i'll have to go twice and pay every time 2X90=180 too much.
Does anybody has any suggestion how to retrieve codes and reset light?
If it's a matter of resetting the light, you should be able to unhook the battery and touch the cable ends together. This will discharge the KAM (keep alive memory) circuits in all the modules, basically clearing the memory.
The longer the battery is disconnected, the better your chances are at clearing out all the codes.
On Domestic GM systems, the airbag light is on ONLY if a problem is CURRENT.
Meaning if you were to have a circuit that was intermittent, the light would be on while the component was out of specification, then if you hit a bump and restored a connection the light would immediately go back off.
Since Catera is really an import built by Opel, I am not sure if they set it up to be lit only if there is a current code or not.
It seems like I remember having to clear codes to get a light to go out on a car that I serviced but my memory isn't what it used to be.
I don't know if this is a dumb question or not, but is there any danger in resetting the KAM? Would doing something like that effect accurate diagnostic readings later on? Just checking (I was thinking of trying something like this).
Lots of independent techs use this method for clearing all kinds of codes.
Anything that needs to 'learn' operating values usually does so pretty quickly.
Air bag systems just monitor circuits for resistance values so there is no learning involved.
All you are really doing is disconnecting and reconnecting all the modules on the car, just like a regular battery disconnect.
I know if u put the key in and turn to acc scroll info till blank. Then press n hold the on off button ( I think) and all error codes will show up as well as the opportunity to clear them. I'll be more precise once my memory comes back to me. I have to perform this task myself today.
