What Have I Done???

I have recently bought a 1997 catera, which I now realize is probably the stupidest things I could have done. The good thing is that I only paid $1400 for it. The radiator light is on, and it smokes from under the hood. cadillac tells me that it could either be a $400 problem or a $1400 problem, but he has to charge me $75 to tell me. All assistance would be greatly appreciated.

i have noticed that the sensors in this car are very sensitive,if your over flow bottle is a little low it will kick on the light,same for oil.do you smell antifreeze cookin(sweet)?

what smell is the burning oil or antifreeze. but my guess is a head gasket without knowing more and there is no $400 leak repair on these things everytime you have any type of a leak and let the dealer fix it they will rape you for a grand.

it definitely has the smell of antifreeze, I have a guy who's going to do the radiator for me, so I guess I will start there. Thank you for your input.

well could also be the heater control valve center back part of engine bay they break all the time a cheap and easy fix.

I wouls say the vavle cover gaskets are bad i looks hard to do but it's not give it a try.

Darksky47 if you have discovered a way to time travel into the future, I don't think responding to 3 year old posts are the best use of your time.
