    3800 Supercharged Swap: Catera

    Finally I got the engine.
    DSCF1123.JPG

Its currently in this vehicle, a 2001 Grand Prix. Bought it at a junkyard for $400. Runs good but it has a small misfire in cyl 1 because of a bad catalytic converter.

Couldn't take a pic of my Catera yet because my camera died, but I will upload 1 later.

I will be buying a 5 speed manual out of a 3800 Camaro. Hopefully I can get it to fit.

A single cylinder misfire because of a bad cat?? I wouldn't count on that.

Good luck on the swap though.

Agree that it might not be the cat-con but I don't think it'll be a big issue. Can't wait to see your progress. Good Luck!

    It has 186K miles.

I got 2 codes off of it, 1 was for the bad catalyst system, another was from the misfire. I did some research and people that have also had misfires, had codes for the catalyst system, and many people say that is the cause of the misfire. Also from what I have heard when something goes bad, and codes arise, the computer goes into a "safe mode" or so it thinks, and it does what it thinks to keep the motor from getting damaged, but it can actually harm it in some cases. But just to be sure I'm gonna get performance coil packs, spark plugs, and spark plug wires along with a new catalyst system. Also I will clean the engine and injectors.

186k... really. its a waist. not worth it if u not rebuilding it and will install it like it is.
cylinder one miss fire... with 186k I can guaranty its cylinder ring and to replace it its rebuilding whole engine... u need to test this engine on compression first, before even buying it and saying its a catalyst....
u can rent tool at autozone if u dont have your own.

What he said! 186K Miles is a lot of wear & tear. There are lots of 3800SC engines out there. Be choosey. The engine is the heart of the project. The 3800 has a great reliability record but 186K is a gamble considering it's already spitting codes.

    Re: 3800 Supercharged Swap: Catera

Well I already bought the thing and also a good friend of mine is a good mechanic said that the catalyst system may be to blame.
But I do have the money, and I was already planning on getting low compression forged pistons along with gaskets. I am prepared to rebuild the engine if I have to. Yes I do have tools, too many to count. My dad owned and operated a Auto Body shop for over 30 years.
The video is what the engine sounds like.

In my opinion, anything done to this car to this extent would be a waste of time and money. Just go find a used G8 or GTO.

If everyone did things to be the cheapest and easiest, nobody would ever drive anything cool.

Rock on with your 3800SC swap, my friend. Can't wait to see it.

He must also have the time and money to do it. Please keep us informed on the outcome.

    Re: 3800 Supercharged Swap: Catera

Thanks for all the support. For you who were wondering about the misfire, I got a compression tester and the compression is just as good as the other cylinders. The real cause of the misfire: A bad coil pack. It runs great now. Also if you watched the video, when it was at higher revs and the engine was shaking, that was a rev limiter, which I found out later, and it only does that in neutral or park.
