Question 99 Catera "Fuel Cap" warning light comes on

We have a 99 Catera Sport and first the transmission is going out which we are going to have fixed, but now the fuel cap light comes on and the car dies. It takes about 30 minutes before it will start again. We have no idea what is causing this, we were thinking maybe changing the fuel filter or the fuel cap, but it could be the fuel pump...too many options for not knowing what is going on. Any ideas from anyone??? Thank you for any help you can offer.

    yo,
our 96 Bronco's check engine light came on; I checked the fuel cap's gasket and found it to be very hard; a new cap's gasket is very pliable; replaced it and the CEL went off.

This article basically confirms your situation:
    http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/ov...c&model=Catera
"...While the Catera remains basically unchanged for 1999, some improvements have been made to Cadillac's smallest luxury sedan. These improvements include a darker black chrome grille, new programming for the power locks and a warning light to inform the driver when the fuel cap is loose."

This phenomenon has happened before with other Catera owners when their Crankshaft Position Sensor was on the fritz. The Fuel Cap light would come on, and then the car would die - taking usually an hour or more after to restart. Ive had similar problems with the Camshaft Position Sensor on our Catera. It could be either one. Check into the fuel cap situation first, if you want, or go straight to having those two systems checked out.
