Does the car shake constantly or just when braking? The control arm bushings will cause the shakes under braking. If you see the metal innards of the rear/vertical bushing it is definitely shot. You'll also see leaked silicon fluid from that bushing when it splits open. The front/horizontals don't have the same ball pivots as the rear/vert but they also tear, just not as easy to spot. My Sport had the braking shakes and I replaced all 4 bushings. Problem solved!

Read my suspension thread and learn more.

Might as well read the other stuff regarding the Catera like the timing belt & tensioner, oil cooler, heater bypass valve, GTO brakes, etc.

The shifter shaking might be related to the bushings but maybe not. I'd guess broken motor or transmission mounts but since the shifter isn't connected directly to the tranny (except by its linkage) I kind of doubt it could be them but I've been wrong before. I had the transmission replaced and a couple of linkage bolts loosened which caused a lot of play/slop at the shifter making it hard to put it into PARK. Is that a problem you've noticed?
