Car has just turned 94k miles. You have to manually shift to low in order to start from a stop sign. the upshift feels like it is jumping from 1st gear to 3rd. but shift quality is okay, there is no slipping. You come to a stop and u must manally shift downt to ffirst or it feels as if it want to take off in like 3rd gear.
Does this seem like an internal transmission issue or the control module?
the problem came on all at once. Trans was serviced just last year and all looked fine.
My climate control all of a sudden stopped , it worked one day and not the next. No
lights on climate control or no sign of any power..
Has anyone run into this situation before?
THANK YOU !
Re: 97 Catera doesnt downshift to 1st gear at stop.
There are 2 shift solenoid valves, the 1-2/3-4 (Shift A) and the 2-3 (Shift B). To select Drive 1st gear the transmission "computer" energizes the Shift B solenoid. To upshift into 2nd the Shift A solenoid is energized, so both are energized. L range (Manual 1st) selects 1st gear with out using the Shift B solenoid, therefore, when the Shift B solenoid won't energize it feels like a 1st to 3rd shift because the shift B solenoid needs to be energized in 2nd. You symptom strongly suggests you have a defective shift B solenoid. A new one costs about 35 bucks, replacement requires removal of the large pan and filter. It is a messy DIY job and takes a couple of hours.
