Car starts for a second then dies

Hi i am new to this forum after looking all over the internet for a solution couldnt really find a strait answer for my Catera. It all started one day when i was dropping my little sister off at school, it was running good all the way to the school i walked my sister to her class came back to start it and it would not start right away. I then knew it would be a problem becuase it would usually start up the third time, it took me 15 tries to start it i then left and went strait home i then shut off the car again and tried to start it to see if it would start and it wouldnt. I then disconnected the battery to see if it would reset i hooked it back up about 30 min later and tried again but it wouldnt start for me, all it did was crank not even fire up.I then realized that before the check engine light would come on and it never came on again, soon after trying and trying the TC light stayed on and i couldnt turn it off like before. So after that i checked for codes and it gave me nothing i then started replacing parts starting with the crankshaft position sensor ,it still wouldnt start, i then changed the spark plugs(has spark), coil pack, the mass airflow sensor, checked the fuel pump(its ok has pressure),changed the fuel filter, checked all vacum lines, timing was ok so i bought a used ECU it then fired up but then died right away. also the TC light now turns off and i can turn off/on the TC. would the ECU be the problem and if i get it reprogamed to the cars VIN will it start? just wanna know before i spend cash for a tow and to reprogram it? Any help would be very apprieciated. my car hasnt started in over 2 months and i miss it alot.

When u say it wouldn't start u mean its just cranking or it starts and dies right away ???
If it stars and dies, watch my youtube video
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ds3k...e_gdata_player

If it just cranks u need to replace crankshaft position sensor. I did same on mine and its work just fine.

Last thing would be to tow to the dealer, u can get tow money back from insurance,
They can do full diagnostic for $125. They will tell u what's wrong with and then u can take it home and fix it your self.
I did same thing with my speedometer problem, the diagnose that my instrumental cluster need to be replace, I did it at home and saved $800

He has stated twice already that he's replaced the CKP,s.

Throwing parts at the problem is not the way to go.

    What was the fuel pressure?

And you have no codes now, current or history?

Will it run if you hold the throttle open just a little?

Please let others know how you make out at the dealer. I've had dealers give me prices so high, not because that is the cost, it is because they don't want to work on the Catera. Talked with the owner of Valley Cadillac in Rochester, NY. That was her answer.

The first ECU I had in the car no codes showed. when I put the new(used) ECU in I got back a MAF sensor and a transmission solenoid. the car was running excellent before,no problems besides the radiator that I changed because it was leaking a year ago

    ----------

I will let u know kaustein so far the dealer ship told me it will be $120 to reprogram the ECU and $130 for a diagnostic

Re: Car starts for a second then dies

What's up? I have a 2000 catera I was having a similar problem all my dash warning lights was on, I kept having to jump start it then I realized that my battery was not holding a charge. My translation wasn't shifting right so I went to junkyard and pulled out 2 tcm's ( transmission control modules). Installed it and still the samething, the abs, tc and check engine lights came back. I unplugged battery for a while replugged it still the samething plus a jumpstart. I bought a new battery. So I check my charging system I took the neg cable off and and car engine died. So my next step was to put a new altenator. And guess what it worked. In conclusion the catera will act up if it doesn't get the right voltage to operate. The catera is a computer driving car.

My car wouldn't start sometime, when I try to crank all just dies, no crank at all. Dies like no battery up there, only hearing clicking noise of relay somewhere under steering wheel. For me to start car again I have to disconnected position wire on the battery just for a second, then just put it car and car Starts right away!!!!! Help
