Would you do it all over again?

I owned the car for just over 5 years. Sadly if I new then what I eventually learned i wouldn't have bought it. One giant money pit. That being said. I did get a fantastic price for the car when I bought it, and for a boulevard cruiser, it was great!

Would you have bought yours then, knowing what you know now?

As much as I like the looks of it, and the combination of luxury/sport you get, probably not. I honestly have not spent THAT much on it, but its the little things that keep popping up here and there that are annoying. The other part is that I live in MN and that thing goes no where in the snow which may be the most irritating part. I know I can get snow tires and that would help, but i'm not going to spend that kind of money on more tires and having them changed out twice a year. Its nice not having a car payment, but as soon as school loans are paid off i'm going back to a Jeep.

Re: Would you do it all over again?

I bought mine new in 1996 and kept it until last year with about 118K. It was my first luxury car - the first car that I ever bought that was more than just wheels. It had some problems at first, but they were all covered by the warranty. My out of pocket costs for the almost 17 years that we owned it were unbelievably low. There was one point where I was playing "musical alternator" because I couldn't get a replacement alternator that would last a whole year. I never had the electrical gremlins that I read about here, none. My biggest problem was leaks of all types - I don't think there was a time when something wasn't leaking - oil, coolant, refrigerant. When I got my new car (a 2013 Buick Regal) to replace the Catera, it seemed odd not to have a drip pan in the garage under the car. When I got rid of the car, except for door dings, it was indistinguisable from brand new. The paint was in excellent condition. The leather interior looked new. There was not a single squeak or rattle. It drove and handled beautifully.

However, based only on what I have read on this forum and the Catera's reputation, I probably would not do it again. I feel like I dodged a bullet. Not sure if I would be as lucky next time.

I have a 99 that I have had for about a year. It has 165,000 Kms on it and it drives very well.

As with all used cars, it does need a few things that aren't too difficult to fix. I had a charging problem, but a new positive cable from the battery
to the alternator fixed that. The rear springs need to be replaced and since no one in the area sells then new, the only place to get them is at the
scrap yard. I have seen a few Cateras in there, but have only found 1 spring that wasn't broken.

Simple things like the coolant light and the washer fluid light stay on, but I fixed them easily. The part that keeps the door open was broken, so I
replaced it with one from the scrap yard.

I love the interior of the car, but I find the exterior quite boring. All in all, I would not buy another for one reason, the gas mileage is awful, and
with the price of gas, I would like a car with better fuel economy.

"Had." It was a 2000 Catera originally owned by a caddy rep and then the "little old lady" bought it. I was the third buyer at 58K. Ironic thing is that I was at a job site and notice the car in a houses driveway. I went over to make sure that it was mine, and sure enough it was. On the back seat were estimates from a Caddy dealer for work to be done. I was going to go up to the front door to tell them about the other issues, but common sense took over.

    ----------

Glad you could do the work yourself. But aren't you at the point where the money you put into the car adds no value to it? Even in mint condition?

    it rides 10 times better
Agreed on the level of comfort on long interstate rides. And at the time it looked good and the 12 cd trunk mounted player was great. However that is about the only good thing about the car.
