    Question cadillac catera codes

I wonder if someone can help me. I have been having a problem with loss of power in my 1997 cadillac catera. I had the dealer check the codes and it cmae up PO300, PO302, PO305. They say that numer 2 and 5 cylinders are not firing properly and that both of the catalytic conertors is blocked because it needed a tuneup. They wanted to tune it up and replace the convertors at a price of over $3500.00. I spoke with a mechanic (not cadillac dealers) and he said that I may not need the convertors replaced they may clear once I tune the car up, he said they also might not but that it is a very expensive to do so and just to do the tuneup first.

What exactly do the codes that I have listed mean. The dealer is very reluctant to give you the exact meaning of them if you do not intend to get the car serviced at their dealership.

    Re: cadillac catera codes

    All those codes mean:
DTC P0300 - Engine Misfire Detected
    DTC P0302 - Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
    DTC P0305 - Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected

Im a bit confused... If the catalytic converters are indeed clogged, doing a tuneup will not fix the converters; they need to be replaced.

Otherwise for the misfiring, the two cylinders that are misfiring; since they are both run from the same coil pack, im going to guess that the coil pack might have gone bad. When they do a tuneup tell them to test it. The pack for cylinders 5 & 2.

While you're at it, you could also check for oil intrusion in the plug boot or sparkplug (take out the sparkplug boot and see if theres oil inthere).

Ahh then that'd probably be the reason for the misfiring.

    Yeah.

But what about the catalytic converters? Are those actually clogged... thats the next question. Dealer may have been messing with you there. The car should have set a code for that.

    Re: cadillac catera codes

It's sensible to go for the valve cover gaskets first and then a tune up. Don't go for the catalytic converters replacement yet because i for one don't see the point. I was told once by a so-so mechanic that i need to replace my oxygen sensors and the Mass Airflow sensor when i should only replace the MAF and not the oxygen sensors. Just like Jeff said, the dealer or whoever he is , is messing with you. With the Catera, you have to take it one a time. Fix the first and foremost problem first and then go from there. And just like Jeff said, there should be a code for the Catalytic converters if they are really bad.

    Re: cadillac catera codes

Do the valve covers not just the gaskets on the cateras they are injected plastic and with age warp as the whole car does then do your tune up on these its just plugs so its not a great cost hell just pull the coil packs and the plugs are there do it yourself

No, oil is dielectric (an electrical insulator). Even with the plug well completely full of oil, the path of least resistance is still through the plugs center electrode, to the ground electrode. The plug would still fire. The coil pack is the most likely culprit, given the cylinders that are misfiring. Carbon tracked plug boots are also a possibility. How many miles on this Cat?
