Valve Cover Gasket Replacement... How Much?

Remove this ad
Hey... not sure if i'm going to have to do it or not, but how much is it to replace the valve cover gaskets? at the stealership, an independent, myself? How hard is it to do ones'self? I searched, and I found one thread that said 530$, but I guess that was at the dealership. Just wanted to get some other options. Thanks guys.

I'd say do it yourself if you are above average home mechanic. This is not a very difficult thing to do but too many things need to be taken out as they are in the way.

I had it done at a dealer. They sold me on the spark plug coils being also wise to replace. I went for it. Coils come in set of 3 together manufactured in exclusive way--only available at dealer perhaps. Total cost of job=$1,400. A competing independent mechanic that is very good quoted $1300. I did at dealer and am pleased with fine work, regardless of cost typical for maintenance on Catera.

Hay Mexican Dragon, just curious, why do you think you may need to replace your Valve Cover Gasket?

Re: Valve Cover Gasket Replacement... How Much?

Hey, didn't see this earlier, rough weekend.

I have a check engine light coming on sporadically. I got the codes czeched, and it came up with a misfire in the even numbered bank. I figure that MIGHT be the reason. I haven't pulled the plugs yet, as I don't have the facilities to mess with my car at all. This is a common problem, and I have a 97 with 101k miles. I doubt the valve cover gasket has been replaced in the past few years/50,000 miles, and knowing my luck, it's going to have gone bad. Still need to pull the plugs though.

I was just curious, my acr runs a little rough while it idles. Although I haven't been really driving it yet. I am going to get the codes also. Is that the thing they do at Autozone, or do I have to go to the dealer for this? I am a Catera Newbie so please excuse the dumb questions.

Autozne gets the codes for free. After getting them post them here.
