pitman arm confusion after alignment attempt.

I went to get an alignment on my 98 Catera after new struts n shocks all around and they informed me my outer left tierod & pitman arm are gone. My question is how can a pitman are go with no bushing or anything. ? Were thinking guy got idler arm n pitman mixed up n its really the bushing in the idler that's gone. Any insight or comments. (loudspeaker)Elvin to the forum paging elvin to the forum pls. lol

Pitman arm???The car has rack and pinion steering, there is no pitman (or idler) arm. Time for a new shop.

That said, pitman arms don't have a bearing or bushing to wear out where they connect to the steering gear, but they do have a ball and socket joint where they connect to the linkage. That's what fails.

Sorry, thought I was in the Eldo/Seville forums.

Corrosion of the splines can cause play between the arm and steering gear.

I shouldn't replace it though right. Just take off and clean it up ?

That depends. If there's play, remove and inspect it, as well as the splines on the steering gear.

Elvin reporting as ordered. Sorry but I can't help much. I'm only fluent in my Catera's failures and she hasn't had that particular trouble .......... yet.

Lol hey elvin how Ru. Ya i don't know what to do lol spend money to change a pitman that prolly doesn't need it. Or replace just outer tierod and take back and try alignment and tell shop i did both. Pitman will be a used part if i do because i have a full parts car but tierod i bought new.

    ----------

How did ur rear end parts change go with those new expensive parts lol. Find any other issues?

Believe it or not the parts guy just called yesterday. I'll pick them up today and probably get them installed Monday. Cross your fingers that nothing else goes wrong.
