    01 Catera AC question.

My in laws 01 Catera was not cooling good so I noticed the temperature was only cooling to 60 deg so I added very little refrigerant but then ac quits so got some evacuated but then it would not get cooler than 60 so again added just a little and the compressor quit again and few seconds later I noticed some smoke coming out from the ac clutch area so turned the AC off. The AC pulley is spinning fine but clutch only engages sometimes.

Is it possible a bad clutch or clutch bearing or the compressor itself gone bad?

If it's the clutch where can I get one from?

    Thanks.

What were you trying to do, refrigerate their bodies? There was nothing wrong with 60 degree AC!

60 degree vent output temperature is pretty warm, it should be ~40.

It should be around 40 to 45 deg with outside temperature around 95 to 100 deg.

I think clutch is bad but not sure if I can find replacement parts.

Well a quick update....I replaced the clutch but didn't do any difference. The clutch kicks in for a second then goes off, even tried to add more R-134a but it wouldn't take it. I checked the coil and it showed 3.9 to 4 ohms.

Also, noticed when I turn on the AC the fans work with no issues so now my only conclusion is bad compressor.

Is it hard to replace the compressor. I know it has few bolts in tight spots. Any quick tips will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Another quick update - fixed the problem, the refrigerant was high causing the compressor not to work properly. After filling to right level the new ac clutch and old compressor is working good.

    Thanks

Refrig was high? Did you use the freon dipstick? Filling to right level? A pro would evac the system and add back the correct amount listed on a/c tag. And monitor a/c pressures while doing so and confirm vent temps.

Yes, they checked it out and said there was too much refrigerant, then evacuated and filled it to the right amount. So far it's working good.

The new clutch is also working good with no issues.
