    98 Catera valve cover swap

    Hi all,

I finally had the chance to swap the valve covers on my 98 Catera today, the replacement valve covers came from a 2001 SAAB 3.0 V6 engine.

I think for 2000 and 2001 Cateras, the Saturn L300 V6 covers should work.

Also, on the SAAB valve cover it has an oil spout / neck that's about 1 inch long and had remove it to get better access to open the oil cap.

After the swap I only drove it for few minutes so couldn't tell if there was any leaks.

If there are any issues I will post it later here.

Here are the pictures of the swap.

If you have any questions or comments please post below.

    Thanks.

Just an FYI. If you click on "Image Links" next to your pic on Photobucket, and copy and paste the IMG code here, the picture will show up. Like this:

    Thanks.

Yes, I did that few years ago (maybe 2009) and have a thread for it somewhere here. I think it's titled under "HCV relocated".

Since moving the HCV up front I haven't had any problems with it.

I have an oil leak issue up front by the crankshaft area, so still need to figure out on that.

    Thanks.

    Nice.

You finally did it. How did you track down those Saab valve covers? Mine leaks very, very little. Not enough to drip on the ground, but enough to smell. When I have time I'll get in there and reseal it.

    I like your detailed pictures.[COLOR="Silver"]

Thanks, through an eBay recycled parts seller. I think the seller has few Saab 9-5 3.0 with him.

I haven't checked for leaks towards the rear of the engine yet but do have a leak in the front by the timing belt area. This all started after replacing the valve covers and not sure if it has anything to do with it. I'm planning to repace the timing belt, tensioner, seals and waterpump.

    ----------

Also, don't have any oil smell after replacing the covers.

Re: 98 Catera valve cover swap

The oil spout opening on cateras are on the driver's side. When you swap the covers then the side changes. For the 2000 catera engine you'll need to get the Saturn valve covers.
