Wanting to install sound system into Catera, would like some help.

Okay so I have a 2001 Catera, sport model, with Bose system.

I'm wanting to put in a aftermarket headunit, amp, and sub. I wanna go with a Kicker C12, with a kicker DX 250.1 500 watt.
I wanna start at the head unit and move my way to the truck for the sub and amp.

Is there alternative to GMOS-06 harness for an after market head unit. I went to a audio store, and the guy tried selling me a $130 harness, I was astonished. I am not subscribed to onstar, nor am I worried about the steering wheel controls for the the radio, I am perfectly fine working the controls from the radio its self. So if anyone could give me another solution to a more standard harness.

Any help or solutions would be much appreciated

I wouldn't mess with it. One of the nice things with the car. And the radio system isn't worth stealing either. Upgrade speakers.

The GMOS-06 has nothing to do with OnStar or steering wheel controls. The stock HU is part of the serial data bus, and anti theft system. The GMOS-06 integrates an after market HU into those systems. It's NOT optional.

So either way I'm going to have to pay for the GMOS-06? Also would it be optional or possible to install a single sub, without installing a new headunit, if so what would be required?

If you want to change the HU, yes.

Yes. A sub, sub amp, and a line out converter.

You can find the GMOS--06 on ebay for less or go to a mobile electronic distributor. I paid $50 for my Gmos-4. The problem with just adding an amp/sub is you have no control over it because most bose systems don't have a separate sub level control. On the otherhand, most amps have hi level inputs so you can just plug the factory sub leads directly onto the amp. And make sure you get one with a remote bass knob. One more thing expect to pay between $1.50-2.00 a watt for a quality amp. If you decide to change the head unit, get one with hi-volt pre-amps 4V or higher, you'll pay a lil more but if your bose system sounds good now it'll sound amazing with a hi-end head.

Okay question is though, why do i have to have that gmos-06 its showing all these other wires, like rca cables saying it needs like 2 outputs that go to here and there but when i pulled the stock HU I didn't see any of that it was a basic or standard harness. I've done a system before, but a cadillac is new to me. I'm not understanding why, do I need this special harness. I guess what I'm trying to get at is I don't care about, the onstar its useless to me, I want to take it out of the car anyways cause it just hangs there. Also if the steering wheel controls are an issue that doesn't bother me either. If its because of the stock subs, I could power them off my own amp if instead of the factory amp.

If its the security issue to I'm not concerned about that either. Most of these little features I don't want or need.

I was also told that instead of all that just, I could wire the HU directly to each speaker it's self, bypassing all that junk. Yes it might be tedious but oh well I'm not trying to make this more complicated than it should be.

Basically its a can bus system, once you pull the radio, the door chime,on*,the factory amp and a host of other stuff stops operating properly. I'm a mobile electronics tech I've been installing for 30 years . That gmos is a bargain unless you don't mind replacing all the spkrs, amp and rewire everything. Not to mention reducing the resale value if you can't put the stock unit back in. Jus sayin.

Re: Wanting to install sound system into Catera, would like some help.

Alright well I guess I'm going have to give in :/ haha. I tried. But alright then, even though I've been hesitating and putting off the inevitable, I've been looking around at different places, I went to my local audio specialist store, Walmart, Amazon, Ebay, etc.. looking at GMOS-06. I've read reviews on them and a lot of them were saying that after they have installed the new harness, that the sound fades in and out.. I personally don't want to put out the money for something that is worthless, or isn't a good quality. I was wondering if anyone on here knew where to find a reliable GMOS-06, or something that is equal to it and does the same thing as the GMOS would. My local audio specialist tried selling me a GMOS for $130 or $140, I thought that was incredibly high.. I'm not sure though, as this is my first time dealing with something like this, but after looking around at them other stores and retailers I saw that some were cheaper, ranging from like $80-$120. I would just like some advice or help on this, because after reading the reviews on them, it wasn't very reassuring that paying that amount for something very unreliable.

And please don't take it as I'm trying to be cheap, just know that the less wires that i have to deal with the less problems I am hoping to encounter.

So to sum up what that long spiel was about, after looking at reviews and pricing it didn't seem to be worth the money, so if someone could recommend me a reliable harness that would fit with my 2001 cadillac catera, onstar and Bose system equipped

Okay so after looking at a HU unit which is a Pioneer DEH-X5500HD, has 4 preamp outputs
    or
Pioneer DEH-X7500s 6 channel preamp output
The wiring harness that will also ship with it is the Metra GMOS-06 factory integration.
I have a Metra 99-2004 dash install kit.

When adding the the harness and HU into the shopping cart at Crutchfeild.com It was saying that some fabrication will be required to install, could anyone elaborate on that? and will the HU and dash kit got together with ease?

As I was saying when I started this post, I wanted to add an aftermarket sub and amp, but in this case after installing the HU and harness, the HU's preamp outputs will all be in use, leaving no room for the rca cables needed for the amp, how do I go about fixing that so i will be able to add the amp?

You seem to have made up your mind. I told you in my last post to buy a better h/u . Most hi-volt units have a sub out. They sound better too. As far as the sound cutting out, there are adjustments on the gmos for the factory amp's gains- again going with a better h/u you tend to have less issues. You're getting advice from an installer with real world experience, not some out sourced clown reading a computer screen
