    I need new rear shocks

My Catera needs new shocks and I would like to replace them with the Monroe Air shocks ($175), but I have 1 question.

Now I have read a few threads about people replacing their shocks with the shocks off an 04 - 06 GTO and they said it rides fine, but no
one mentioned how the ride was compared to the air shocks they had.

I don't need the self leveling as I do not carry any heavy objects or haul a trailer and there is only 1 person that sits in the back, but I do
still want a good plush ride that I know air shocks give.

Do the original air shocks on the car give it that plush Caddy type ride? Or can I save some money and get regular shocks that will give a good ride also?

    Thanks,
    Ian

Your car does not have "air shocks" or "air ride". It has ELC/ALC (Electronic Level Control/Automatic Level Control).

The shocks are "regular" oil filled shocks, but they have an air bladder integrated into them. The hydraulic (oil) part of the shock is what controls body motion and absorbs shock. That's what decides ride comfort and handling. The purpose of the air bladders, is to maintain ride height when weight is added.

The coil springs are soft (for comfort), they will maintain proper ride height with no weight in the car, but they were never intended to support additional weight.

If your intent is to keep the ride as plush as possible (and keep it from sagging and/bottoming out when loaded), get OE style shocks.

Thank you for this info. I guess since I only have my 150 pound father in the back every once in a while, I'll go with regular shocks and save a few bucks
