Attachment 97512Can anyone tell me where the oil LIGHT sending unit is location on a 1997 Catera is?? its the switch that controls the RED oil bucket w/spout light on the instrument panel NOT the oil pressure unit that controls the PSI gauge on the instrument panel
Sorry, I thought you were referring to the oil LEVEL sensor (the one that triggers the orange oil level light). The oil PRESSURE switch (the one that triggers the red oil pressure light), is internal, located near the oil pump.
The oil pressure sender (the sending unit for the oil pressure gauge), is located on the front of the block, near the crank pulley.
Edit: Oh, yes, I was wrong. The level sensor requires a pan drop to replace, it is not threaded into the side of the pan.
ok, the light that comes on is red and looks like a oil bucket with a spout, please is you can explain more of : The oil PRESSURE switch (the one that triggers the red oil pressure light), is internal, located near the oil pump.: what do you mean "internal" ? where would the oil pump be?
What needs to be done is an actual oil pressure check to determine if its internal problem or just the idiot pressure switch that could be out of calibration.
Below are probable causes:
Excessive main and rod bearing clearances (someone may have installed the wrong-sized bearings or standard-sized bearings on a reground crankshaft). Only 0.001-inch of extra clearance in the main bearings can reduce oil pressure up to 20 percent!
Excessive camshaft bearing clearances (a bearing may have slipped out of place when the cam was installed).
Excessive clearances inside the oil pump.
Leaks between the oil pump and engine.
Oil pump relief valve stuck open or installed backward.
A loose or mispositioned oil pickup tube (too high in oil pan).
A defective oil pressure sending unit or oil pressure gauge.
Low oil level in the oil pan.
Cracks or leaks in the oil galleries or gallery plugs.
look at 4 or 6
Is that from your '00 FSM? '98-'99 cars use both a pressure SENDER (a variable resistor that reacts to pressure) for the gauge, and a pressure SWITCH (an on/off switch that activates at a preset pressure) for the light.
4 is the pressure unit that controls the psi gauge on the instrument panel, 6 is the low oil senor which controls the orange low oil light on the instrument panel , am looking for the switch/senor that controls the red oil light.
