    shifter problem

while driving, i accidentally bumped the shifter. Tranny did not shift and stayed in drive, but shifter moved into third. i continued driving with no problem, but when i stopped the shiftter wouldn't move. now i can't shift into park, so car won't start and can't open trunk because of safely switches. car is still in drive according to the indicator light. i am about 200 miles from home and would appreciate any ideas on how to get the shifter back in synch with the tranny. thanks it is a 2000 catera

Disconnect the battery. Turn ignition to off and put foot on brake and see if that helps. Try that in any sequence.

Something is out of position. Sounds like the shifter physically moved, but did not change the transmission setting. Linkage might be bent or loose.
