99 Catera engine cuts out on acceleration at 1700 RPM, smooth before and after

I am happy to have found this site. Looks like a lot of wisdom and experience here.

Maybe you can help me. I am not a mechanic but am trying to help a neighbor who is older and hasn't anyone to help on things like this besides me.

He has a 99 Catera with 54,000 miles. It sat for several months without running then, when he tried to start it, it would start intermittently but run fine once started. With the help of a neighborhood mechanic and this site I decided to replace the crankshaft positioning sensor. It starts every time now but there are other issues.

During acceleration from a stop the car runs smooth till it shifts to second gear which tends to be around 1,750 RPMs on the tach. Then is cuts out or coughs badly till I give it enough pedal to break through 2000 RPMS then it runs fine.

    Other clues:
The voltmeter looks like it is at about 7 or 8 volts when going down the road. The radio has quit working except once when the battery charger was hooked to the battery. The trunk actuator will not work (it did recently but has quit). The air conditioner works as far as running but no cold air. Of course it is 104 deg F here right now.

Given this information, what do you suggest I do?
    Thanks,
    Bill

I am not sure what Gand gasoline means but if it means bad gas I think that might be an issue. I am trying to run the old gas out so I can put in some decent non-ethanol gas. I would think though that, if it was just bad gas, that it would affect performance at any RPM?

Probably clean throttle body and check the MAF sensor. Unplug the sensor and see what it does. Also, check gasoline....thanks.

Corrected the post. Bad gasoline or sitting for a long time can cause moisture to condense in the tank.

Thanks for the info. I will let you know what I find out.
I have even gone back to the guys at NAPA and they say to bring the Crankshaft Positioning Sensor back to swop for another if it turns out to be the culprit.

Re: 99 Catera engine cuts out on acceleration at 1700 RPM, smooth before and after

I have solved, with help from this forum, most of the issues above.
First, the cutting out at 1700 RPMs solved itself. I will not look a gift horse in the mouth.
As for the radio, trunk lid opener and gas door opener, I followed the instructions in this post:
    http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums...light-fix.html
The bad solder point in the photos is the same one that was bad on mine. After about 10 minutes I had it soldered and back in the car and the radio, trunk and gas door work fine. It is a very good feeling to do it yourself and avoid buying an $80 part and paying the labor for someone else to install it.
I plan to run the bad gas down low and fill with a good grade. I also plan to have the AC charged.
    Thanks,
    Bill
