    The thicker oil didn't "fix" anything, and 15W-40 is TOO HEAVY for an engine designed for 5W-30/10W-30.

    Re: Low Oil Pressure

    Yoo! with a Catera with 150K+ miles on it and you want to make it to 200K miles you need to add whatever helps, of corse not new cars, put in cheap oil you get cheap results, put in good oil and you have no problems with you car at high mileage like i do.

    Heavy, as in too high a viscosity.

    "Heavy" gear oil.
    "Light"machine oil.
    What "weight" oil does my engine require?

    Common terminology.

    SAE 30, 5W-30, 20W-50, etc....are all SAE weight designations.

    Oils that contain polymers that allow them to change viscosity depending on temperature (5W-30, 10W-30, etc....), are multi weight oils.

    oil weighs 7.5 lbs per gallon or 1.875 pounds per quart.

    I learned the rhyme "A pint's a pound the world around" was I was a tot. Almost any liquid weighs approximately a pound per pint. Water is a bit more, oil a bit less.

    I thought you were asking if by "too heavy" I meant actual weight.

    fresh water = 8.32#/gallon
    sea water = 8.56#/gallon
    diesel = 7#/gallon
    gasoline = 6#/gallon
    Lube oil = ~7.35#/gallon

    You utilize all this trivia when you're trimming a submarine for neutral buoyancy while 800 feet down................"Chief Of The Watch, flood 1,000 pounds to auxiliaries from sea !"

    Re: Low Oil Pressure

    Synthetics dont break down and create slug in the engine. that enough of a reason all by itself for me. I can almost GUARENTEE that our car came with full synthetic from the dealership.. as far as fuel octane goes, lower octane specifically lowers the performance of the engine and that IS in the manual.

    odds are what you saw on your oil cap was from when the motor only warmed up enough to create some condensation thus creating what you saw. usually happens when it gets colder out. just my two thoughts

    Re: Low Oil Pressure

    I agree!!! my father use to put 20w50 into all his "old" cars cause of low oil pressure, and every single one would get bearing knocks... i would only use what is recomended in the car. if it is the oil pump failing (and sounds that way) adding a thiker oil will only make the oil pump work harder and go faster. It really sounds like a oil pump. It seems the sensor is working. i did notice lower pressure when I was 2 qts down in my catera, but Never had a 0 psi read... its 12 yrs old. 150K. I would not continue to test drive it.. its worth an oil pump.

    Sorry I ment to referance the post about not useing thinker oil.. bt moistcabbage or rethro...
