I was experiencing similar symptoms with the blinking (S) sport-mode light. And then my Catera died on me one day. Have the Crankshaft Position Sensor changed.

The crankshaft position sensor is located adjacent to the oil filter. It has one 7mm star-bit bolt. The connector is located at the back of the engine (driver's side).
