Sorry the car reeks of south Florida, "old person with their left turn signal on."
And I'm an old person!
I think the colors scream senior citizen, red or black with a black roof would look better. Maybe I'm just old at heart. Lol.
I did not read all posts but here is an honest evaluation..
Catera FUN to drive! great sound system, very unique to look at!
Catera not so great... Hard to find a good mechanic to work on it for a reasonable price!
Problem that I have had on my 00 sport with 140K now. 120K when I bought
both controll arms $600 or so
both ignition coils $400
waterpump timing belt and tentioners $750 ( a MUST DO if no history!)
Purge valve $600
Computer update $100
rear springs (used $200)
Rear shocks Bypassed auto leval) $200
k134 relay ( to make radio and sunroof work) $91
aux waterpump $200
Thats all I can think of at the moment.
I loved mine, and its currantly for sale for $3200.. I can assure u its a better buy than one with no history!!!
But good luck.. oh.. they dont get good gas mileage either.. thats why i am selling mine. 20mpg average.
That doesn't sound like excessive maintenance for a 12 year old car with 140K on it.
Don't confuse maintenance with repairs. I had a Ford Ranger, with 160k on it and other than wear items, i.e., brakes, tires the only thing that I had to repair was a leaking ps hose. That was it. At 160k the hv/ac control didn't work properly and didn't want to go through winter with an iffy controls.
Ok.... None of the listed repairs are out of the ordinary for a 12 year old car with 140K on it.
Maintenance issues I can tolerate. Neverending repairs I can't.
I've had cars that required very few repairs as well: Accords, my Town Car, even my Chevette was pretty much trouble free. But you can't expect that every make and model of vehicle will be able to be driven for 10 years and 100K+ miles and not need a few things replaced.
Some cars are EXCEPTIONALLY reliable, the Catera is not one of them. But that doesn't make it junk.
Exceptional reliability should be the norm. That is what Japanese car manufactures gave us and that is why US manufactures took the hit in production that they had. Sorry the craptera is junk when compared to it's relabliyty record. The things that I have had go wrong were unbelievable! And reflect the quality control and standards of GM at that time.
The car does have some nice thing about it. Ride is nice and quiet. Nice Bose system. But the negatives farrrrrrrr outweigh any of the positives that the car offers. I feel sorry for anyone considering buy this car.
Kaustein's day to day, month to month, year in year in year out negative presence in the Catera Forum seem to indicate that his problems with the Catera model Cadillac are not entirely automotive!
FWIW, basing the reliability of a particular model on ones own bad experience, or on the problems posted on a forum (where a majority of the members post ONLY WHEN THEIR CAR IS BROKEN) is extremely inaccurate. Owners of cars with no problems aren't spending their time on here letting us know how good everything is going.
