clearing codes

Dear...
It seems pretty well established that my "check engine" warning is due to a poor gas cap seal. Right now it's O.K. but it's iffy as to when I will lose the seal and the warning will again appear. I'm trying to get a code reader, at a reasonable price (Canadian tire wants $250, NAPA, a cool $4000). I am also trying to get a gas cap for less than $100 (Roy Foss's cost). In the meantime I would like to be able to clear the check engine light if it appears again. Is there a way of doing this? Oh, and where is the code reader plug in? (1999 Catera).
Thanks
John

Re: clearing codes

Some autoparts stores check/clear codes for free- the one i know of is Autozone, but since im not sure if there are autozones in Canada.. you'll have to check around to see if anyone does it.

The input for the scanner is on the bottom of the dash (drivers side), left of the steering. a black connector with rectangular pin inputs.

As for finding a cap, see if you can find a catera from a junk yard and rip one from there.
