    2001 Catera, slow to accelerate

    Hi,

My in-laws 2001 catera is having a new problem. They said the car is very slow to accelerate, but ones it reaches about 40 to 50 miles it runs normal. Could it be the throttle body, transmission or something else?

    Thanks.

Could be your tranny going into Limp mode, does the light "s" with a gear around it constantly flash when its accelerating slowly?

I'm not sure yet, since they just told me about this issue over the phone. I'll check it tonight and let you know. If it is going into limp mode what could be the issue?

That my friend i'm trying to figure out myself, it will do that to protect the tranny from bigger problems if something is wrong. My catera's tranny runs strong but does that once in a blue and I have to turn the car off and back on again to get rid of it so my best guess with it being at 149,042 miles is it may just need a tranny filter and flush. Hopefully if that's what is causing slow acceleration then that could be the solution.

could it be the transmission control module (TCM)?

retho78 perhaps checking on couple of things to help figure it out,

    • Is the car revving OK but just slow to shift or vice versa
    • Did it start happening all of a sudden or developed gradually
    • Does it happen in specific weather like rain/wet or always
    • When was the last time the transmission filters and fluid was changed
    • Any clunks, judders, etc., when the issues happen
    Cheers.

MAF sensor can cause issues especially in lower speeds/rpm's. It is common to go out as well.

Re: 2001 Catera, slow to accelerate

Okay, test drove the car and I didn't feel any issues with the slow acceleration, but will keep an eye and see if it does anything weird. Also, did a scan with my scanner and no codes showed up. The MAF was changed last year because of RPM issues.

Will keep you all posted if it happens again.

    Thanks for all the responses.

Maybe it's starting off in winter mode or 3rd gear?

Re: 2001 Catera, slow to accelerate

One thing that I noticed is that the gear shift moves back and forth (like rocking) when on any gear. It feels like it is loose or something. Is that normal on 99-01 models? My 98 catera does not have that back and forth rocking.

Also, the trans fluid and filter has never been changed on the 2001 catera. The car has 124,000 right now.

    Thanks.

I have a 2001 Sport and the stick doesn't "rock". I'd look into that.

Only time i ever got any movement in mine was when I'd brake with warped rotors, but more "vibrate" is what it did.

My 98 did that vibration, when the rotors where warped. I'm not sure why it is doing that rocking for my in laws 2001 catera.

Re: 2001 Catera, slow to accelerate

When is the last time the wheels were rotated and balanced. If they dropped a weight, that would cause the rocking. Mine did the same thing. As far as the acceleration, when I first bought my Cat I had to replace the MAF to fix that same problem. Try cleaning it, or if it happens again, disconnect it and see if it goes away. If she runs better when it's disconnected, you've found the gremlin.
