Exclamation Cadillac catera speedometer not functioning

I am having problems figuring out why the speed sensor is not working for my 98 Catera. I replaced the two front sensors near the breaks by my two front tires and it did not solve anything. Could the issue be a bad speed sensor wire harness? or an issue with a sensor as mentioned in other posts near the transmission? Also where is this sensor located exactly on the transmission?

What other suggestions could i get to have the speedometer working again?

    Thanks!!

It's very likely that your EBTCM has gone bad, especially if you have a bunch of warning lights on your dash that won't go out related to the ABS system, etc. Check the known problems link at the top of the forum.

The speed sensors on the front wheels are for ABS and traction control and have nothing to do with the speedometer. The VSS is the wire connector at the very rear end of the transmission.

If it's malfunctioning you probably have a code set in the ECM. Do you?

I am having the same issues with mine, no speedo, no trip, no odo. But I have no warning lights on, I am thinking it is the speed sensor at the rear of the transmisson, has anybody else done this repair if so send us the link.....

Mine (2000) just started doing something similar. ABS and TC lights come on (and stay on) and the speedo, odo and trip odo immediately stop functioning. I'll continue to drive, and after a bit of time the speedo and odo's come back to life and a second or two later the ABS and TC lights go out. It'll do this multiple times on a 30 mile trip. It will also do it upon start-up, even if all was OK at previous shut down.

    Best,

    Marvin

I had my 2000 Cadillac Catera do the same thing 2 years ago. When you have the ABS, TC, Check Engine light and no speedometer, it's the EBTCM (Electronic Brake and Traction Control Module). A new one runs about $1600. Best thing to do is to take the part out, send it to Module Master in Idaho, where they refurbish it and send it back to you within 5 days and give you a 5 year warranty for about $225. I had my mechanic do mine and 2 years later, my car still runs like a charm. Here is the link to Module Master below:

Their customer service is great as well!!!

I agree with Doug on this -- those ceramic break sensors on the calipers are not the issue. my car's speedo failed too, and I bought a new spedo sensor and installed it myself-- its located down the drive shaft in the middle of the car, look/feel on the up-side of the drive-shaft-- look for the senor wire-- its an easy fix ( its like 10mm bolt that hold it). Per jarnett56: "IF the ABS, TC, Check Engine light and no speedometer, it's the EBTCM (Electronic Brake and Traction Control Module). A new one runs about $1600. " Ive done this and was really happy to spend a total of $500, NOT $1600 for the part + additional labor-- which is what the STEALERship suggested...
