possible to replace catera engine with bmw 328i?

bmw 328i through 99 had same transmission as catera. possible to replace catera engine with rebuilt 328i? will everything else mount correctly or would that require everything else under hood to be replaced?

The first thing to check would be if the BMW engine would physically fit into the Catera engine compartment, since the BMW is a straight 6, not a V6.

Where do you get a used good condition 328i engine? This can't be cheap. It would seem that a BMW 328i engine in good shape would be much more valuable as a replacement in a BMW than in a Catera.

Some members have some pretty inventive ideas for Catera engines. One posted a while back that he is putting in a carbureted small block V8.

Save yourself a lot of trouble, if the engine is shot get rid of the car and buy something you want.
This type of conversion will be nothing but headaches and likely cost you more than a good used car anyway.
The fact that the transmission may be made by the same company doesn't guarantee a successful transplant in any way.

Re: possible to replace catera engine with bmw 328i?

i've seen many rebuilt '99 328i engines for around $2500. my '01 catera has been in florida its whole life and is in good condition apart from normal wear and tear, and i really like the car. i doubt that the purchase price of a used car that will give me the same ride would be cheaper than installing a rebuilt engine and i doubt a car purchased for that price would not also soon need repairs, costing much more. i've known a lot of peope who installed rebuilt engines in their cars and never known anyone who had a problem. i'm really only interested in knowing how easy it would be to install a rebuilt engine from another car in this one. the size of the 328i was my first concern but at first glance it looked like it would fit, but i worried how everything else might mount. i also thought about a bigger gto engine that used the same chasis/platform but that might not be doable... i'll look for the threads with other engine installations in cateras, though. thanks!

Best of luck to you, getting it in is one thing.
Getting it to run is another.
This kind of swap was cheap and easy back in like 1975, not so easy these days.
All the computer stuff has to work and interact.
    As I said, good luck.
The best place to start is to find someone who has done it before.

Given enough skill and money, any engine swap is possible. I don't know about the BMW engine but this garage in Thailand does Omega swaps using a Toyota Supra inline 6. Oh, did I mention it's a Twin Turbo?

Re: possible to replace catera engine with bmw 328i?

actually, i did some searches on here and around the net and i never found any mention of engine swaps between the '01 catera and, say, '03 3.2 omega engines. wouldn't this be the easiest engine swap to do? would it be possible to import a rebuilt '03 3.2? i believe they also offerred a 2.2l 4 cyl, and 2.5l 4 cyl turbo deisel in the omega that year, but the 3.2l 215hp seems to have a lot of potential to add more power with available turbo & supercharger kit. wouldn't this be a straight swap? all the other catera engine swaps i read about sounded like massive headaches. there was also a production omega sold in the UK with a 377hp lotus engine, vette zr1 gearbox, bigger differential, 0-60 in 5.3 2nds, top speed around 187mph. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotus_Carlton

i'm just looking for the easiest engine swap to a bigger, more reliable, more upgradable engine... maybe i'll stop by the omega forums and see if they put '03 engines into '01 omegas...

There are 3.2L V6 engines for sale on Ebay. Brand new longblocks meant for the CTS. The have all the updates and upgraded parts that cause the problems in the 3.0L. You have to reuse the Catera oil pan, intake, alternator, A/C, etc.

    - 3.2 liters/3,175 cc V6 (LA3) 87.5 mm bore, 88 mm stroke, 10:1 compression ratio, double overhead cam and four valves per cylinder
    - Multi-point injection fuel system
    - Power: SAE 220 HP @ 6,000 rpm; 218 ft lb @ 3,400 rpm

    NOTE: The ebay ad's heading says it's a 3.0 but it's actually a 3.2L.

It's been swapped into Cateras successfully. Considering it is externally identical to the 3.0L the installation is fairly easy. Below are some related threads.

I suggest starting a new thread and ask owners that have swapped the 3.2L V6 for their comments.
