retho78 just musing as I saw a debate between a guy talking virtues of European cars as these drip oil to be corrected by a knowledgeable guy that most have a plastic or other secondary shield/pan to collect drips whereas the American cars used to have bare bottoms

Re: 98 Catera, oil pressure issue.

Add my car to the ones having this problem. Today, high 90's, drove for about 45 minutes and oil pressure light came on briefly idling at a traffic light, but pressure gauge was still at 20. Pressure increased to 40 when moving. Light came on a few more times when idling and then stayed on (with warning noise), until I parked and re-started after lunch.

My question is - isn't the oil pressure gauge more accurate than the idiot light? Should I worry as long as I am not in the red zone on the gauge?

I think when the warning noise comes the car's computer will try to shut the engine down. I think this is a safety feature...again this is just a guess because I haven't had the warning noise before, but just the light came on twice. After the clean up so far no issues. I would give a try cleaning the sensor first, especially the wire connectors and the tip of the sensor. I used the sensor cleaning spray and did not scrub with anything else. If that doesn't work try replacing the oil pressure sender.

It is most times a dysfunctional nag, if you don't want to ignore it might as well try the fix which seems to work including what retho78, myself and others have done as appropriate the Oil Pressure Sensor and or Oil Pressure switch that is appropriate for your vintage.

If you fix and if it is for real perhaps good to know that too.

To me it was a multitude of factors kind of creating a perfect storm (Low Pressure Indication) and usually associated with low stock idles, weak alternator doing little at low idle/stop situations, thinned oil because of heat and sensors/senders sensitivity to heat and the effect of heat on connectors and all.

    Good luck.

It's very strange that many cateras are having the same problem now.

    Maybe...LOL!

Oklahoma might get some hot temps this week 95F - 98F after couple weeks of cool down. I'm hoping the oil pressure will be good. I'll keep you all posted.

    Thanks.

Just an update! The temp was between 95 and 97 today, and the oil pressure is holding steady.

    Thanks
