Oil cooler replacement?

Remove this ad
Ok, as stated in my intro, I am getting a '97 Catera with a failed oil cooler. No coolant made it into the oil as told by my friend that has the car, therefore I am on the safe side. I guess my question is, is it safe to temporarily by pass the cooler with a looped high pressure hose at the lines by the filter until I can get a new cooler, or should I just plant the car until I get a cooler? Any help is appreciated, especially how to replace the cooler. Supposedly the car was well taken care of and only has 70k on it.

Thanks!

Re: Oil cooler replacement?

Just want to confirm if it's ok to bypass the cooler. My friend said it should be ok. I will have the money for the cooler soon, I just want to hear it run.

Re: Oil cooler replacement?

Yep you can do that or u can always run external cooler however when you extedn the rubber lines to wherever the cooler is going to run you will loose oil pressure so that might affect other engine functions.

But give it a try.

Re: Oil cooler replacement?

Yeah like I said I'm gonna bypass until I get the money in the bank to go buy what I need to do the oil cooler replacement. I'll most likely hack the lines and install a high pressure hose to loop them with some good fuel injection clamps. my friend said it shouldn't be a problem unless I was driving in hot weather, but it's going into September so it will start to cool down.
