Traction / Check engine / Transmission HELP!

Remove this ad
I really need some help with this car. I am so sick of it.

Pulled the car into the garage and was running perfect. My trunk/Fuel door/sunroof/other stuff was not working anymore so I took out the Multifunction module and resoldered all of the connections. Plugged it back in and everything started working perfectly. Next I decided to remove the old XM radio unit someone had installed before I bought the car. I pull the cigarete lighter out.

Here is where the problem starts. ( I think) Right as I pull the cigarette lighter out I hear the Multifunction module start clicking insanely fast. I disconnect it within 45sec. I get the XM radio thing removed put everthing back togeather except the Cigarette lighter. I plug the Multifuction unit back in and everything starts working again.

Now I start the car and the Check engine and Traction control lights are on. I try to move the car and the power steering seems dead. The car also starts out in 3rd or 4th gear and is very hard to get moving and will not shift! The only way to get it into 1st gear is if you use the gear selector lever.

Also my car is making an aweful noise when it is in gear and it gets worse as I turn the wheel. Im thinking something with the Power steering.

I am thinking all of this has something to do with the multifunction module freaking out and maybe blew some other modules or something. As the car was running perfect as I pulled it into the garage!

I have read that the EBTCM may have something to do with the power steering/traction control. But my ABS light is not on. And I have No idea what could be causeing my car to start out in 3rd gear and not shift. I really need help with this.

Re: Traction / Check engine / Transmission HELP!

I would have thought EBTCM, but I'm pretty sure you'd see the ABS light come on at some point along with the speedo not working occasionally, and the problem with the power steering doesn't seem to fit either. For starters, I would seriously consider replacing the multifunction module ($53 + shipping from gmpartsdirect.com) since that's where this whole thing started and you know how to get to it. Also, check out your radio wiring to see if somebody might have kludged something together.

Re: Traction / Check engine / Transmission HELP!

A new symptom. My blinkers do not work. This car is going to be the death of me!

With the multifunction module out my problems are still the same I just don't have Radio, Trunk release, etc. I just really want to figure out my transmission problem.

Also the code that comes up for the check engine is p2106. I looked and cannot find anything on that code. I am starting to think maybe my ECU along with otherthings got fried when the Multifunction module freaked out.

Power steering is now working I am not sure why. My speedo also works so I don't think it is the EBTCM.

Re: Traction / Check engine / Transmission HELP!

Our cars are equipped with a speed sensitive steering system. Meaning that at higher speeds a little solenoid on the steering box decreases fluid pressure to steering system causing a heavier feel to the car for a more realistic steering attitude. It's possible that your multifunction module caused a sporadic mishap with the steering system. Be sure the system is fully of fluid. As far as your P2106 code is concerned.. I believe it has something to do with your throttle body, Be sure it's plugged in correctly. Check all the fuses in your fuse panel to see if anything burnt out. If everything checks ok, disconnect the battery for a few minutes and touch both battery cables together to discharge all components in the car and try it again.

Re: Traction / Check engine / Transmission HELP!

Hey RADman can you post either a link or a part number to this multifunction module? I just searched for it on gm parts direct and could not find it. Thanks

Re: Traction / Check engine / Transmission HELP!

Part number 90 494 163. Mine's a 2000; not sure what year your Catera is, but I think it's the same part for all (maybe someone can verify). Really difficult to say if it will help, but since you had a problem with it, and it's a ~$60 repair that takes about 10 minutes, it's worth a shot to see if it might help at least some aspect of your problem.
