I have read through many write ups on this site and the GM service manual before beginning this thermostat change, so I knew somewhat what to expect. The upper intake and lower intake came off easily. I changed my heater control valve, valve cover gaskets, and spark plugs; all without problems.
While apart, I'm changing my leaking thermostat. There is one "hidden bolt" that holds the transfer pipe between the thermostat and upper radiator hose and also holds the dipstick and a bracket used the lift the engine. I stripped that bolt...three days ago. I have spent the last 3 nights trying to remove it...with the correct torx sockets, then a 3/8" wrench, size #0 thru #4 craftsman bolt outs, and a few different vice grips. It will not budge. It is destroyed.
Therefore, my question is...has anyone tried to yank the thermostat out without correctly removing the transfer pipe? For instance, would it be possible to simply remove the thermostat bolts, and give the thermostat and pipe a serious yank upwards and separate the thermostat and pipe? I'm running out of other ideas. I have never dealt with a bolt like this that I can't remove with all of the tools I have or cut as a last resort.

Thank you for the moral support. I didn't think it would be possible to rotate the thermostat around either, mostly because of its depth. I haven't tried to yet because I don't want to make a small leak into a big unrepairable one.
I decided to try an old school trick and put the whole thing back together and take it for a ride so I could apply 198 deg. heat to it and break it loose with vice grips while it was hot, but was unsuccessful in the end. It was my last resort before the bad 'yank and rotate' idea.
So if anyone has any other ideas or knows of a cutting tool i can use in that tight spot, please let me know.
