Brake light switch hard to get back in

Hi, all! I'm a new Catera owner in Pensacola, FL. I've got a 97 and pics will come soon. I just got this car on Wednesday of this week. Love it. Sold my Mercury Cougar b/c my wife and I are expecting a baby in December.

I've been searching and I've found some info regarding my brake lights, like the switch placement and how to remove etc.; the trouble is, I took out my old switch without breaking it, as the how to threads suggest. Once I got it out, I cleaned it, worked the plunger, plugged it back in and found that it worked like new. Well, now I can't get the blame thing back in there , and I'm having the same trouble with the cruise switch.

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions as to how to put the used switch back in? Thanks!

Re: Brake light switch hard to get back in

Ok, well I could get the switches in part of the way but NO MORE. Trouble is, the brake pedal woudln't disengage b/c the plunger wasn't being fully depressed. I drilled a hole in the center of the plunger and glued in a thumbtack. Perfect! The brake lights now come on as soon as I push on the pedal.

The other switch, should be for the cruise. Well it wouldn't stay in so I figured I'd just cancel the cruise with the switch on the turn signal so I glued the plunger in and put some tape over it for insurance. Well, lo and behold, the cruise works as it should...cancels when I press the brake but sets and works perfectly.

What exactly should this switch be doing?
