    Water Pump Replacement

    2001 Catera Sport

Started slowly losing coolant. Intermitant cooling issues. Drone
coming from area of water pump, and signs of coolant leaking onto
flywheel and pooling at front of engine.

Looks like a no-brainer. Here's my question: Do you NEED to replace
the timing belt when you do the water pump? I know it's a good idea,
but I don't have the money or the tools to do it right now.

    Re: Water Pump Replacement

doesn't look like you have to replace the timing belt. alldata makes no mention of any special tools either

    REMOVAL PROCEDURE

    -Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    -Drain the coolant.
-Remove the intake air resonator chamber.
-Remove the front timing belt cover.
-Remove the water pump bolts. Important: Use a catch basin to prevent the escaping coolant from contacting the timing belt.
    -Remove the water pump.
-Clean the cylinder block sealing surfaces.

    INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

-Coat the seal ring of the water pump with silicone grease, GM P/N 12345579 or equivalent.
    -Install the water pump.
    -Install the water pump bolts.
-Tighten the water pump bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft lbs).
-Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
-Install the front timing belt cover.
-Install the intake air resonator chamber.
-Refill the cooling system and bleed the cooling system.
-Reconnect the negative battery cable and reprogram the applicable accessories.

    Re: Water Pump Replacement

Yeah, that's what I read in Alldata as well. Maybe you or someone hear can clarify something for me.

Everything I've read says that the water pump is timing belt driven. Is that correct? The serpentine belt diagram under my hood shows the belt going through the WP, which I'm assuming is the water pump. Are both belts involved? I'm confused. I guess everything will make sense when I take it apart...

The WP is serp belt driven, just cover the T belt to keep coolent off it when you pull the pump off, there may still be some coolent present unless you do a good job of draining the rad....

    Re: Water Pump Replacement

That's what I thought! On the Autozone site there's a note that says "Pump is timing-belt driven, timing belt replacement recommended."

Thankfully I ordered a new one directly from a dealer - only $35

    Thanks for the help!
