    Installing aftermarket cd player

2001 Cadillac Catera...I have the stock tape player in the car. I called my local car stereo installers to see if they make mounting kits & wiring harnesses but they say no, you have to rewire the stereo and speakers. I see other cateras with aftermarket players. Is there anywhere I can go to get the information needed to do this? please help...the radio is getting old! Thanks alot

If you have an ipod you can always buy a cassette to ipod adapter at walmart for like $13 dollars as a temporary solution.

Also if you need help on stereo help try crutchfield they are the greatest car stereo site and defiantly trained stereo professionals they have online chat for help.

    Hi,

I just changed mine from a factory tape player to aftermarket cd player. I bought the cd player from best buy and took it to a car aftermarket upgrade place. They had to install a special interface and wiring harness to get it work. You may also find the mounting kit at circuit city but not sure. The only problem with aftermarket players is that you cannot control the volume from the steering wheel.

does your car have bose? If not, it doesnt take much. Mine has bose, so i had to make a speaker harness to run from the front of the car to the back to connect at the output side of the factory amp. The dash kit I used is a Metra 99-2004. Its not hard at all, just time consuming.

My Stock player is identical to the factory bose players they put in....But it does not say Bose on the face of the digital read..So even though they look identical im thinkin its not. Retho, do you remember what you paid for the wiring harness? I like to do things myself just to know how, so if you guys have some tips on doing this like how i go about getting the dash face off that would be great! Much appreciated guys. Thank you

I put a Pioneer head unit in mine. I just bought the Metra kit- bought it on ebay (the installation looked professional), and wired the whole thing up by bypassing altogether the harness, and just running new wire to each speaker. I just ran the power wires to the head unit, so I wasn't using the Catera amplifier any longer, just the power the head unit supplied. And with those Bose speakers that came in the car, it sounded great. Running the wires takes a couple of hours, but it's worth it. That's just an option for you.

Yeah, just standard speaker wire. I think I used 14 gauge, but whatever you are comfortable with will do. You don't really need a heavy wire for just a regular head unit.

    Hi,

I tried first to install it myself with harness I got from Wal-mart and it didn't work so I had to take it to the aftermarket car radio installation store and they said that cateras need a special interface harness. It cost me around $100 that includes mounting kit, harness and labor............ it took them about 30 minutes to install it.

I dont have a bose system in mine, they said If I had the bose system it would be more work. They would have to run wires from the back.............blah blah blah :-).

    Thank you.
