    Catera accelerating!!!

    Okay folks!!!

My 2001 catera when I drive the car everything seems to be fine but when the car is in park you can see RPM going way high like around 2000 RPM. This happens only in park but right when I shift it to drive it comes back to normal. What could be the cause?

    Thank you

Intake gaskets could be leaking. The idle control valve can be stuck open... PCV valve can be cracked like mine was...

    Cool Re: Catera accelerating!!!

I was having a simular problem before my cat finally shut down this past winter. Had to get a tow home.
    Symptons :

    1. Would cold start fine in morning ( or after engine totally cooled off)
    2. At work I would take a smoke (yuck) on break and sit in the my car
in park with engine running, thats when i noticed the engine reving up and
    down intermittingly
    3. Became increasingly harder to start when it was not totally cold.
    Again, it finally died

I always referred to myself as a emergency mechanic ( fixing things too late)
, bad move with the catera.

I replaced both coil packs, plugs and CPS, changed oil.Should run like charm right ?...would not start @
all after that. Was baffled at this point. Then I found this sight. I started
to troubleshoot parts I've never heard of. Hey like I said I,m an emergency
mechanic. I cleaned out my throttle body and breather intake system. It
started an ran well when the MAF was not connected.

Knowing what I know now if I were you I would disconnect the connector to
to MAF and see what happens . Then I would replace the CPS if has not
been replaced. Its a inexpensive part and easy to deal with.

I believe my computer was trying its best to adjust and compensate for
my deffered maintenance until it could no longer do so.

Finally this is a fantastic site. You will get responses to all your questions
    here.
Stay on top of your maintenance once your cat is repaired.

Thats my two an a half cents...from ( no longer ) a emergency mechanic.

    Best of luck

I think it could be the throttle body sensor malfunctioning. I did change the CPS and cleaned MAF. I'll give a try by replacing the throttle body.

    Thank you.

I hate the "shotgun" approach to trouble shooting. Throwing parts at a problem is expensive. Invest in a set of service manuals.

    Hi,

I tried what Leon3 said to unplug the MAF sensor and it did slow down. I plugged it back in and it started accelerate again so I'm guessing it is the MAF sensor. I have a bunch of codes with me from the check engine light.

    P0171, P0174, P0300, P0304, P0306, P1530, P1511

    P0300-RANDOM CYLINDER MISFIRE

    P0304-CYLINDER #4 MISFIRE

    P0306-CYLINDER #6 MISFIRE

I changed all the plugs and not sure what could cause this codes to come up. Any ideas or recommendations?

    Thank you.

    Thank you.

    hi,

How much are you asking for the throttle body? Is it in good shape?
