Heat Wave Car won't turn over

Remove this ad
Hi! Glad to find this forum. My wife's 97 Catera had a strange problem the last couple of days. East coast had a heat wave 95-100Deg. After sitting at work all day the car would not even do anything , No clicking , nothing. We left it and the next morning it started fine. Again after work it was dead. Today the temp dropped into the 80s and the car ran and started fine all day. Battery and Alternator are new.
My research found little . there were a couple mentions of Starter solenoid solder joints and Starters in general . I can't stress enough that it was really hot.
Thanks for any help or suggestions. I talked to my mechanic and he seems a little stumped.

Re: Heat Wave Car won't turn over

I would look at the pos battery cable, also check the ground cable. I had a similar problem, check to see if the pos cable is getting very hot (too hot to hold your finger on it), especially at the lug to bat post?? My connections all looked good but the resistance inside the cable post connection had a lot of resistance. The alt guage will be showing a very low reading.

Re: Heat Wave Car won't turn over

Hmmm, Im on the east coast too. My experience has been that HEAT kills batteries. When you say it's new..How new?
In a place like Phx, AZ not many batteries last more than 2 years.

Re: Heat Wave Car won't turn over

Battery is only two weeks old. The car has run and started fine sinc the outside temp has returned to normal. Thanks for the replies.

Re: Heat Wave Car won't turn over

Question, do you get any electronics (i.e. radio, interior lights, dash lights, etc.) when it won't start? Also, do you get anything, like does the solonoid click?

Re: Heat Wave Car won't turn over

Everything works incliuding the power seatrs. No respone at all from the starter. It happened the other day (89Deg) . My wife called me and I went to her aid. (5 minute drive) . I got in and it started right up. She is frustrated.

Re: Heat Wave Car won't turn over

just fixed mine. Same exact promblem. there are other posts about this issue. Its the pos. wire that runs from the bat. to the starter.. Sometimes you cant see it as in my case but the wire gets corrodied on the inside and when you add heat to the issue it doesnt let the flow of electricity get to the starter.. I ran a brand new cable from the bat to the starter and no problems. I live in ia and its been in the 100's the last couple of days with no probs.. Hope this helps as I know how frusterating it is being stuck somewhere for an hr for it to cool down enough to let it start.. And when its already hot out that can take awhile.
