    97 catera AC freeon leak

My 1997 Cadillac Catera doesn't blow cold air anymore. The fan still works though.

I took it into a Cadillac Service Center (in Chantilly, VA) and they told me that I had ZERO freeon in the car (obviously) and that there is a major leak around the Evaporator core and possible around the AC compressor. Bottom line, to fix/replace everything its going to run about $3,500.
They gave me an alternative option to Evacuate and Recharge the system instead of the new parts which would run about $410, but there is no guarantee this will work & last (it could last for 1week - 1+ year).

    My questions are:
    1) Has anyone had any success with an AC Evacuate and Recharge?
    2) Is it possible that the Cadillac dealer is just vastly over charging me? I'd spend up $1,000 to get my AC working again but not much more.
2b) If the aforementioned problems are legit, can I trust local auto shop or car AC specialist to get it running again? If so, any suggestions on where to take it?

Please advise if you have had any experience with this type of issue. So far I've had good luck with my Catera, but there is no way I'm going to put $1,000+ into it just for AC, on the other hand, I'm not ready to give it up yet (it has <60,000 miles!).

all the prices you note are obscene, granted the evap, if it needs to be replaced is a sizeble labor job. But first, you need to determine beyond a doubt if the evap or the comp or both are leaking? this is 101 stuff. What you can do cheaply just to see if a little charge may help and see how big a leak you have is get two cans of r134, get a friend or yourelf and put the cans in, I'm assuming the system is empty. You may buy a little time and this may cost $35.00+-. At this point w/o proper diagnosis to spend $410 for an evac and charge is a waste of your hard earned money ...Granted to do the job properly but only after the leaks are fixed the system needs to be evacuated for proper performance. They should have been able to better pinpoint the leak. The new electronic detectors are pretty good...Any ac shop can diagnos this problem.

How the hell does an eleven year old vehicle have less than 60,000 miles on it? WOW, that car must have REALLY been pampered by the proverbial "old lady that owned it before me".

I think i may have a small leak somewhere as well and will be heading to autozone this weeked to pick up a can of R134 and figure out what is going on.

I had the same problem with about the same amount of miles. It turned out to be the compressor. I just chose to get a used one but i regret that decision because the AC doesnt blow as cold air as it used to
