    emission problems

I have a 98 catera and here recently it started blowing the little rubber pieces that connect the two steel lines that come off the exhaust manifolds. I replaced the one on the driver side first and it lasted a couple of weeks then it blew again, so I replaced it again and then the passenger side went.So I replaced it and then they both went. I checked the air pump and it is working, whether or not the sensors are working right or not I don't know. What do I need to do? Since this started happening the power and performance really sucks.

there is a mushroom looking check valve in that metal pipe, it may be stuck closed??

AIR (air injection reaction) check valve. It's a part GM has been using since the early 80's. The check valve keeps exhust gas from going into the AIR pump. The cad price is real high, however there are some available for other GM models as little as 12.00, externally they look similar?? you may want to reserch this before you jump in...
This almost sounds like a clogged convertor, especially when you mention the power reduction. That check valve is easy to remove, why dont you pull it off and see if it moves...

I had the exact same problem. Was plugged cat's. I had Midas replace both, they had to move the rear O2 sensor to behind the convertor but it hasn't affected the cars performance or thrown the CEL light. Total cost for both sides was $250.+tax. Good Luck !!
