I have a 97 Catera, 89000 miles. Ive drove it from VA to PA and back.
No problems. Ive did regular oil changes, and I check all my fluid levels.
I was driving home yesterday, turned a corner, and all of a sudden the
"CheckEngine "
light came on, the engine started missing, and running very rough.
It had been raining all day,
I'm wondering if the rain had anything to do with it..
Havent had a chance to do a good check of
everything due to the rain. My first thought
was a blown head gasket. No water in the oil though.
Im using Synthetic oil. Anyone have a clue what may have happened?
btw it wasn't running hot when this happened.
You need to get the DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) that goes along with the check engine light. Some people say you can get the code read for free at an auto store, but I bought my own reader. They are very inexpensive - just search for OBD II scanner. I bought one a few years ago called a U380 and it works great for the Catera.
Ok I got the error codes deciphered, the # 3 spark/cylinder is misfiring.
I changed all the plugs.... Same problem. So I guess I need a coil.
Does the Catera have 1 for each cylinder? Where is it located? The plug wires all run down the back of the engine, so I'm guessing its a royal bitch to get to.
Where can I get a coil cheap?
btw, I called Pep Boys to price check a tune up. Dude said $600...?????? :banghead:
You might want to check the plug wire before changing the DIS (distributorless ignition system pack). If the camcover gaskets ever leaked the wire may have been contaminated with oil.
