This morning, my 2001 Catera has developed a new problem. The amber low coolant light came on the instrument panel. the Cadillac dealer told my wife(I'm at work)the coolant level is fine. He thinks it's a bad sensor in the coolant run-off tank. I was planning on buying my wife a new car this month.
i was considering keeping the Catera as a weekend hobby car-It's worth vvery little on the used car marketeven though it's got only 50,000 miles on it.
The dealer wants $300 to replace the tank and sensor. I'm wondering how hard is it to replace-anyone know.
For today,I didn't get it fixed....but I can't imagine trying to sell it with a lit warning light.
you just have to remove the resevoir tank and the sensor goes through bottom and into the tank. you might have to buy a whole tank
REMOVAL PROCEDURE
Partially drain the coolant.
Remove the surge tank hoses.
Remove the surge tank clip
Slide the surge tank inward until the tabs disengage in order to remove from the wheelhouse panel.
Disconnect the low coolant level switch connector
Clean the surge tank using a mild soap and water if the surge tank is to be reused.
I've also heard if you don't want to get rid of the sensor all together just remove the plug cut the line and twist it together. I haven't done that, but I read that somewhere here.
that's what I would do if my sensor went bad.. cause why do you need a sensor when you can use your eyes to look through a translucent tank. hahaha
I've replaced 3 on my 2000 Catera...You must replace the whole tank...tank and senor all in one...that said, isn't hard to do, just disconnect hoses, unbolt and rebolt. and re attach senor wire.
Thanks, MP...I emailed for the GM part#...I couldn't fing it on the sitr you posted...
yeah it doesnt tell you the part number on gmpartsdirect
after you've selected catera and your year. go under "cooling">"radiator and components">"reserve tank"
