water pump....

So does anyone know the defect on these things. Do they actually crack and leak or is there just a gasket that needs replacing. It's kind of silly to replace a pump if it still works fine. Mines leaking. I looks very easy to replace. And I'll inspect it then but I just want to know what too look for before I get into it. Thanks!

Easy, not sure about that! Anyway it wears as well, so if it is leaking replace it, it comes with a new gasket. This is about a $800 dollar job, so if you can do it yourself do it, but not sure about easy, well if you have the right tools.

Re: water pump....

which water pump? There is one mechanical and two electrical.

The electrical are sealed units that wear out, heat expansion on the plastic shells destroy them. not much you can do for them. If someone finds a good retrofit for those electric pumps and the plastic heater control valve I'd love to know. Hmmm....
and oh yeah they are easy to replace.

The mechanical pump? The money and time you spend getting to it is way more than the 'value' of simply resealing and replacing shaft bearings in an old one. I ain't removing both belts and all that crap on the front and having to reset the timing to play with an old pump. It ain't silly to replace it.

$800? I was quoted $154. I don't take my car to the dealer. It is the mechanical pump that's leaking. But I didn't know the timing belt needs to come off too. If that's the case then I can't do it myself. The way it looks is remove the serpentine belt and then drop the pump through the bottom.
