Yeah, i'm a big fan of german engineering. I'm starting to learn the cars like the back of my hand too. Everyon eloved my cat too . My friend even offered his lt1 '98 trans am for it but i decided to pass. I'm excited about the merkur project. The scorpio is basicly just a streched xr4. It'll be my fun testing car. i've also been seriously considering an opel gt as a fun fixup for the summer and sell it right before school gets back in. |

The GT can be a real rust bucket. I looked at a few looking for a project I could do with my son. I liked the idea of a mini-Corvette but the ones up here in the snow belt were too far gone. I'm in a transition in my life. Recently retired and looking to move. Once I get settled and finish the Catera, I'll be shopping for a Porsche 914 to put a small block V8 in. Renegade Hybrids makes swap kits that simplify things. If I ever do it, watch out!!

As far as gittin from the insurance, of course they will go low, but proving how much maintenance you stay ahead of helps a lot. My offer when mine was totaled started at 1500 (for 97 cat with 150K miles). I told them I was an engineer and treated my car like my machines: failure analysis, then replacement based on any potential of faikure within another 100K. I said I expected a payout based on 90K miles / excellent condition. I got 3300 minus 320 for salvage (total 2980 and kept the car).
Fixed the bumper, no damage to underneath, repositioned the trunk lid and glued the RH taillight. Looks good and didn't spend a dime to fix it. The only clue is those collapsed lumbar supports in the seat but I'll get those soon. She protected this worn out back of mine, and from the looks of your car and the truck your cat saved a lot of teeth and bone. They are built to crumple at hi speed and save that interior fer sure.
Good luck in your replacement search and may you remain a continuing hazzard to all in this forum.
FYI elvin I remember those 70's "tin-can corvettes" heh. |

They of course have cars listed for sell but they have a billion cars that are not listed that they will sell. I guess it kind of depends on what you are going for when you get one. I see the body kit in the picture, I hear talk of a SBC, you could save some money getting one that has been striped a little if you know your going custom. Been there in person and it is cool as hell. I had a Porsche phase. As expensive as the Cadillacs get I am glad the Porsche phase never took off. |

There was a story this morning about a Maxima that t-boned a Ford F150 on our local news. The truck looked about as bad as the truck you hit. The driver of the Maxima died. From the looks of the car it will take dental reconstruction to make a positive ID. Pretty bad.
If our cats get hit they let you walk away when some other cars that small wouldn't. I'll keep repairing mine and drive on. |

Germans are not known for under engineering anything. Having to pass German tough crash standards and survive at Autobahn speeds makes these very tough cars.

I loved the car too. I'm working with the idea of an ls6 swap in a cat. Wish me good luck. I i did I'd be a permanent member on here. I'm not exactly the most knowledgeable person and i don't have anyone at home to teach me so i learn from working on cars at home and asking questions and making a fool of myself on here. |

It's the fool that never asks questions. You're doing fine.

Sad that you wrecked it but think of it from the bright side now you get to go find yourself a nice 2001 Sport... mine has had absolutely none of the issues that the people have been experiencing on here..
I am forever going to be bummed about not picking that 2002 Sport with a manual transmission that I came across... with the 3.2L engine in it... AGHHHRRR!!!...
BTW i love how you painted that rear tail section to mimic the face lifted models... |
