Talking HID Fog DIY/FAQ (BiXenons)

This thread will focus on how to install HID kit in your fog lights, where to get it and what to do to complete your transformation.

For the job you will need an HID kit, I recommend you go to eBay and search for "H3 HID 5000K" and you will find a couple kits from $70-$80 which is not too bad.

Now with an HID you have two options you can install a relay kit or you can just go the direct hook up which will work as well because our cars have Fog Relays so you wont have too much of a problem if you just hook it up directly.

I would recommend 5000K only as it gives you around 3100lumens of light per bulb and it has pure white with slight purple/bluish hint but you can only tell it appart when you compare them to halogen lights.
The 4300 would be nice but its too yellow looking for an HID kit, I assume you are going to want a little color out of your lamps...
6000K on the other hand you start getting too much blue light, too much glare and not enough light down where it matters... so just stay away from those.

I have experienced with all three and the 5000K is the best one with optimal light output and color.

I got my kit from Great Outdoors Equipment and its an H3 HID kit with 5000K color. All mounting brackets etc... we got a couple of these kits at work for some test and they are pretty good and cheap in case you ever need to replace any of its components. The ballasts come without any labels, go figure, but you can see many of the more expensive units being just like this particular one but they have a sticker... no biggie.

Here are some of the pictures of the kit.

Next up will be info on the installation procedure and also pictures of before and after as a result of the installation.

Re: HID Fog DIY/FAQ (BiXenons)

here is a picture of the 5000k and 6000k H3 bulbs i have, they are from the same manufacturer and are mounted in the same aftermarket fog light housings using the same ballast, only difference is the colour rating.

When i bought my car i was living in a small town and drove a lot of country roads. When i had the fog lights on people would constantly flash me thinking i had my high beams on because the fogs were so yellow in comparison. so i bought the 5000k hid kit thinking this would match closest to the factory driving lights (4300k d2s) well i discovered that the aftermarket 5000k was still more yellow then the driving lights, only slightly but still enough for people to think my highs were on. Now i have the 6000k and couldn't be happier.
Although the 5000k light is brighter the 6000k light is still plenty enough for the fogs and it lights up reflective paint better.

Re: HID Fog DIY/FAQ (BiXenons)

Wow thats a great picture, it clearly shows the difference and how much bluer the 6K kit is compared to 5K, I wish we had the 4300 to compare to the two other ones...
The temperatures here are around -5 so it wont be until next weekend for the installations and comparison pictures between stock and HIDs...

Re: HID Fog DIY/FAQ (BiXenons)

I found it! When i replaced the 5000k with 6000k i took a picture to try and compare... unfortunately my old camera doesn’t capture it the way a human eye does so a slight difference in this pic is actually more obvious when looking at it. if you look closely you can see the drivers side is 5000k also look at the light on the ground.
The driving lights are factory 4300k D2S Philips 85122 bulbs

Re: HID Fog DIY/FAQ (BiXenons)

O wow this is some great material, BTW i wonder if you had any tips for removal of the fog lights cuz I need to take mine off and fix one of the mounts...
That way i will be able to easily remove the old bulbs and throw in the new HID bulbs... from the look of it I will need to bend the anti glare shield out of the way in order to fit the HID bulb as I think the HID bulb is actually taller then the OEM H3 bulbs...

Re: HID Fog DIY/FAQ (BiXenons)

I have d2s bulbs in my factoy headlights. I need to get new ones. But I see these are way more expensive than the whole kits I find on ebay. What's the diffenence? Why are my factory bulbs so expensive? They go for about $200 a pair. I believe in getting what you pay for. And if these bulbs are much better than lets say the HID h7s I would much rather pay the 200. But my question is would I even be able to get the h7s or any other bulb to fit in my projectors?

Re: HID Fog DIY/FAQ (BiXenons)

or here. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/6000K...5143QQtcZphoto I'm just confused as to what to get and where to buy. I'm also misled buy the differences in the color of the light put put by the Kelvin rating. 6000k at this store is hyper white where some place else it's blue. Any help would be great

Re: HID Fog DIY/FAQ (BiXenons)

Hey guys I hope this clears up any confusion about color temperature and light output, I hope this comparison that I have put together helps you see the difference in the HID kits that they sell on eBay etc... ...
4300 is even more yellow but about the same as light down the road...
